Re: Compaq Presario CQ40-320LA Downgrade to XP

Try the following steps and drivers for your model

Make your Vista Recovery cd/dvd if you haven't yet, found out here

Your model needs AMD sata driver to be sliptreamed onto XP CD installer.

If you did it right, you'll pass BSOD error.

Use Nlite to slipstream AMD sata driver.
A good guide to sliptream sata driver, here

Note: Do NOT use sata driver from that guide, your sata driver is given below.

AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver, here

or

if you wish an AMD SATA driver from HP site, here

extract sp39719 to a folder and use files in RAID7xx folder

if it does not work, you may try sp40046 for the latest AMD Sata AHCI controller from HP ftp site, here

Note:

For step  7, Choose "Insert"->"Multiple driver" and select folder of RAID7xx

Select ONLY x86 driver for AMD SATA AHCI.

Nlite download, here

_____

Try the following drivers,

Install .Net Framework before others, here

Catalyst Software Suite (for your AMD/ATI Chipset, HD 3200 Graphics/Video drivers), here

Please post, if you had dedicated ATI video graphic.

MS-UAA  (before IDT audio, model and ATI HDMI drivers), here

IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver,

1. sp41693, vista driver, reported work in XP here

2. sp39671, vista driver, reported works in XP here

Note:
After reboot, please confirm the installation by checking in Device Manager under System Devices to see if MS UAA installed properly.

There should be a listing for Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.

If not, you should have a PCI with yellow!.
Right click it and Update Driver,
No to Connect, No to Search and last Install Automatically.

High-Definition Audio (HDA) Modem Installer and Driver, here or run windows update if it does not work

ATI HDMI Audio Device, here (Download the red ATI HDMI Audio device driver)

Broadcom Wireless, here

Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC, here

JMB38X Card Reader Host Controller Driver, here

ENE CIR Receiver (Vista driver), here

Alps Touchpad Driver, here

HP Quick Lauch Buttons, here

If you had Bluetooth, here

If you had for 7 unknown devices (buttons drivers), here

Do manual installation

Go to device manager, right click unknown device,

Choose to update driver, No to connect,

Choose install from a list or specific location, Don't search, Have disk,

Browse to the location of machine.inf.

Do it for the rest of unknown devices

AMD Processor Update, here

Good luck
