Actually pressing F8 must be done just as the BIOS screen disappears. F11 is for HP System Recovery Manager before the BIOS disappears.

Erico, I ran a system restore and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for your help. Does anyone know what caused this? I've heard people suggest to turn off Microsoft Updates becasue this kind of thing happens sometimes. Is that a good idea? Also, now that my system as reverted to a previous state, will it try to download the same updates and install them again? Or is Microsoft fixing it?
Hi dgar1987,
What causes this is Microsoft Updates. When I use the updates it is never in the automatic mode. Change your microsoft update settings from automatic background install. That is where the gotcha was for your issue. If you don't change that setting you will go through the same hassle again.
I select which updates to install, not Microsoft.
The most practical way is to install a few at a time. Each time you install an update your OS will do a system checkpoint. The checkpoints are a good thing as it they give you an accurate point of reference from which you can restore and avoid the update which hosed your pc.

There is talk that the following patch is the one causing the crash; it was released 8/24
Title = Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB973879)
UpdateId = {D0288FFE-E149-44F3-BFA5-FB0437095F4D}.102
Bundles 1 updates:
{D5EF5770-7041-4AFF-BDD1-C42D7F51DE01}.102
We should be able to uninstall it in safe mode (or revert to an earlier restore point if you have one). My system is at home so I'll test this out later tonight.

hp dv6-1245dx to be specific.

The update is still available if you have Vista Service Pack 1 installed. So, after doing a system restore, immediately download and install Vista Service Pack 2 and this update will not bother you any more.
