I have a problem with touchpad in my HP dm3 notebook. Recently it stopped accepting any input. Also on/off button has no effect. It also disappeared from Device Manager. I found it here after selecting "Show hidden devices" from the menu. In properties it is said that "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)". I've tried reinstalling touchpad drivers with no effect.
Model: HP Pavilion dm3-1105ew
OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1 (x64) with all updates

Hi,
Try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, shutdown the notebook ( if you have to, just hold down the power button until it turns off ), remove the AC Adapter and remove the battery. Now hold down the Power Button on the notebook for a full minute. Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and tap away at f10 as soon as you startthe notebook to enter the bios menu. Press f5 to set the bios defaults, use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save this change, use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter again. Let the notebook fully boot and check the touchpad function.
If it is still not working, this would sound like a Hardware issue. If your notebook is still under warranty, you can contact HP and arrange to have the notebook repaired under warranty using the links below.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
Regards,
DP-K

Thanks, it worked. Just out of curiosity: what does holding the Power Button do?

Hi,
You're welcome ![]()
Holding down the power button, with no power supply connected, just discharges any residual current in the Motherboard as this can affect connected internal Hardware sometimes.
All the best,
DP-K

Same here for my Pavilion DM4 (French/français). The difference being that the "revert to defaults" button seems to be F9 in my BIOS. The fix works like a treat - I hope you are treating this as a hardware bug though - while I am able to scour the internet for fixes, someone like my mother would would have to pay someone to do this.
And I thought we were only supposed to have to do this for Linux issues and that when it was Windows everything magically just worked? ;-).
Thanks for the fix.

Thanks for the information, but what if you have Windows 8? The famous Start Menu is gone now. I have the same problem, but it only started when I installed Windows 8. Must be a problem with a missing driver, but I couldn't find a working driver and Windows update isn't giving me something. Hope you can help me!

Hello Hierislisa,
I see that you are having problems with the touch-pad on your HP computer. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.
Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.
