Hi,
Before we will start with it I've got one thing to tell You . Downgrading this model is not always easy and Your model is designed for good work under Vista. Please check first this link written by Joshua Wood and concentrate in it on problems that may appear when You will be installing sound card. I know then this is guide for dv5 but many hardware and drivers are the same for both models. It's recommended also by me to print this guide and informations about problems with sound card.
First make Vista backup. Here You've got all informations how to do it.
You have a folder with drivers & programs that may prove very helpful after XP downgrade. Copy folder C:\Swsetup to DVD Before formatting your hdd.
Update Your Bios to the latest version from here.
Now You need to slipstream Your Sata drivers (only x86 drivers) win nLite.
Here is guide how to do it and here are AMD SATA AHCI Controller for You. Just unrar this drivers with winrar.
Be sure also that You are using at least WinXP SP2 version. If you haven't got SP2 version here you can download this service pack and here You've got guide how to slipstream this file with XP written by nLite.
In nLite You can even burn Your new XP CD with those changes.

Drivers for Your model:
First You must install .Net Framework here (You need it for Catalyst software and HP Quick Launch Buttons)
How to install HD 3200 Graphics/Video for XP
For this video graphic, ATI do NOT release XP drivers due to some agreement with HP that backed by Microsoft.
However, you may utilize Mobility Modder by driverheaven.net.
Download these files
1. Download MSXML 6.0 from Microsoft, here
download msxml6_x86.msi --> 1.5MB
2. Download Mobility Modder, here
Do the following steps
1. Please make sure you had install .Net Framework,
2. Download newest desktop drivers, here
Run Catalyst Software Suite but cancel the installation once the driver is extracted.
3. Run Mobility Modder, browse to the driver in C:ATI/SUPPORT/xxxxx/ --> hit modify. Wait until driver is modified.
4. Wait until Install is finished and reboot
Further detail can be found in here

MS-UAA for SP2 (required with a reboot before Audio, Modem and ATI HDMI Audio) here
MS-UAA for SP3 (required with a reboot before Audio, Modem and ATI HDMI Audio) here
Please check first this link written by Joshua Wood and concentrate in it on problems that may appear when You will be installing sound card. I know then this is guide for dv5 but many hardware and drivers are the same for both models.
IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver,
1. sp41698, vista driver, reported work in XP here
2. sp41693, vista driver, reported work in XP here
3. sp39671, vista driver, reported works in XP here or here
4. Find Your Vista audio driver on this DVD where You burned C:\Swsetup folder. It may also work under XP.
When You will install any audio driver with success check is Your sound working.
If there will be no sound after restart check posts below. There are informations how to solve this.
High-Definition Audio (HDA) Modem Installer and Driver here
ATI HDMI Audio here
HP Quick Launch Buttons here
Broadcom Wireless here
Realtek RTL8102E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet here
Synaptics Touchpad here
ENE CIR Receiver here
HP 3D DriveGuard 1.10 A here
Cyberlink YouCam here
JMB38X Card Reader here
If you had for 7 unknown devices (buttons drivers), here (New link)
Do manual installation
Go to device manager, right click unknown device,
Choose to update driver, No to connect,
Choose install from a list or specific location, Don't search, Have disk,
Browse to the location of machine.inf.
Do it for the rest of unknown devices.

If you found the sound was not working after restart, do the following steps
1. Download devcon command line utility, here
2. Extract and copy the file to c:\windows\devcon\i386\devcon.exe
3. Make command line to restart MS-UAA automatically or just download this file
The command line as: C:\windows\devcon\i386\devcon.exe restart "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_3607103C&REV_03"
Notes:
1. The location of devcon.exe is in c:\windows\devcon\i386\devcon.exe if you change it, you need to edit idt.bat
2. "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_3607103C&REV_03" is hardware ID for MS-UAA, if you found it in a different name change it.
3. Place idt.bat in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
4. The sound will be restore within 6-10 seconds, because of that there is NO sound of XP start-up

Thanks Daniel. I gave Kudo's for the posts. Yes, these newer boxes get harder to downgrade to XP but Vista is just not a very good OS. Hopefully Windows 7 has corrected a lot of issues we see in Vista. This is my first experience with nLite. Awesome program. I should have opted for the SP3 integration but was not patient enough to wait for a 305MB download. ![]()
Not a problem, I'll do the updates after getting the initial install done and the drivers installed.
MANY thanks again for your help.
Hope I can return the favor to the forum!!!!

Please wait with installation of drivers. Download Service Pack first. Sp2 is more recommended on start. Why? Because in SP3 may appear more problems with audio and other stuff.
If You will install SP3 then below is ms-uaa driver for it because it's different then this for SP2:
MS-UAA for SP3 (remember install it before IDT audio and ATI HDMI drivers), here

You SHOULD start a new thread, since you are talking about a different laptop and different process all together.
Now, back to the issues at hand. Since I was able to boot in safe mode, i uninstalled the graphics drivers and deleted the ATi folder all together. I went to AMD site and downloaded the Catalyst for XP and HD 3200. Installed, and working. Installed NIC driver and through the audio driver process and have excellent graphics, sound and network. Pressing onward with WiFi, TouchPad and others.
By the way, the Mobility Modder process did not work for me. I never got a descent load of Catalyst or driver without an OS/device error message.
Thanks again!!!
