I have a GS 60 120us laptop. Just recently I am unable to use my CD DVD optical device due to a failure to install the driver. I have un-installed and re-installed the driver, searched for updated drivers and still no luck. System is telling me that my driver is up to date. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
Try the following.
1. Download the following utility that will add 'Take Ownership' to the right click context menu. The download is on the following link.
This is a zipped file. If you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip ( if you have a 64bit version of Windows, you will need this version 7-Zip ) which can be used to open this so that you can run the installer. Then just right click the zipped folder, select 7-Zip and select Extract Files. When done, open the newly extracted folder and you will find the utility to add 'Take Ownership' to the right click menu. Just double click it to install and then close the window.
2. Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, open up DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall and click the prompt to complete this. Close the Device Manager window.
3. Click the Start Menu, open Computer, double click Local Disk C, open the folder 'Windows', open the folder 'System32', right click the folder 'drivers' and select Take Ownership.
Just below this folder, open the folder 'DriverStore', open the folder 'FileRepository', open the folder that starts 'cdrom.inf', right click the 'cdrom.sys' file and select Copy.
Close all open windows and then Paste this file on your Desktop.
4. Once again, click the Start Menu, open Computer, double click Local Disk C, open the folder 'Windows', open the folder 'System32', then this time open the folder 'drivers', right click and select Paste. You should now get a prompt that the file already exists - select the Copy and Replace option and click on any further prompts to complete this.
When done, close all open windows and restart the notebook - see if Windows can now install the optical drive.

This past weekend I upgraded my Blackberry desktop software. The older version contained Roxio but now I can't find Roxio anywhere on my system. I also have an update version of ITUNES and microsoft media center. Since then I have un-installed the Blackberry software. I followed your directions and it seemed to work . The driver installed. But, then the system gave me a messag that I had to reboot to have the changes take effect. I did and I was right back to where I started. There were three cdrom.inf files in the file repository. Now there is one and the other two are in the recycle bin. System will not allow me to restore the two files . Now the the system is looking for the origial disk to install the drivers. I really appreciate your time and help.

Hi,
You're welcome ![]()
Ok, lets get the files restored from the Recycle bin first.
Click the Start Menu, open Computer, double click Local Disk C, open the folder 'Windows', open the folder 'System32', right click the folder 'DriverStore', right click the folder 'FileRepository' and select 'Take Ownership'. Close all open windows and see if you can now restore the files from the Recycle bin.
If they now restore OK, browse back to FileRepository and open this and let me know the following.
1. How many folders start with the name 'cdrom.inf'?
2. Open this folder ( if there is more than 1, check them all ) and check if the following 3 files are present.
cdrom
cdrom.PNF
cdrom.sys

Ok. All the files have been restored Thanks!
There are 3 folders with the name cdrom.inf Each from a different year - 2006, 2008 and 2009
Each folder contains:
cdrom.inf
cdrom.pnf
cdrom.sys
component.man
Thanks,
RS

Hi,
Try the following and let me know - most of this is pretty similar to the original method.
1. Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, open up DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall and click the prompt to complete this. Close the Device Manager window.
2. Click the Start Menu, open Computer, double click Local Disk C, open the folder 'Windows', open the folder 'System32', right click the folder 'DriverStore', open the folder 'FileRepository', open the folder that starts 'cdrom.inf' ( the 2006 version ), right click the 'cdrom.sys' file and select Copy.
Close all open windows and then Paste this file on your Desktop.
3. Click the Start Menu, open Computer, double click Local Disk C, open the folder 'Windows', open the folder 'System32', then this time open the folder 'drivers', right click and select Paste. You should now get a prompt that the file already exists - select the Copy and Replace option and click on any further prompts to complete this.
4. Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( just below Help on the toolbar ).
Does the drive get installed correctly or do you still see the same error?
