HDD dead! presario 5100CA - unable to restore

Hi, HDD dead! presario 5100CA wich I'm not able to copy recovery files on D partition.

Any solutions?

This system came with with Windows ME.

Still have recovery CD; partition D remade. Both C and D formatted in Fat32.

Tried to install Win Xp pro on new HDD and files copy hangs at 49%. Would like to go, if possible, with Xp

Any help?

You should try running scandisk to find any potential errors, then try reinstalling.

Re: HDD dead! presario 5100CA - unable to restore

Thanks for the answer but it was already done...

I tried the same HDD (the new one) on my other desktop and the installation went perfect.

It seems (some guess)  that some drivers (lets say the motherboard one) are not on the installation Cd  and installation stops...

any other answers?

Thanks...

Re: HDD dead! presario 5100CA - unable to restore

First step is to zero-fill the hard drive (wipe clean all data).  Use Copywipe or equivalent to do this.  A single pass will be sufficient.  Now try to install XP.  If you still cannot load XP, then you need to "SLIPSTREAM"/add the XP drivers to windows XP using Nlite.  Copy all the data from your XP CD to the hard drive.  Download and extract the XP audio, display, keyboard/mouse/input devices, modem, and webcam drivers to a location on the hard drive.  Instruct Nlite to add these drivers to XP.  Nlite will re-create the WXP installation data with these drivers in the form of an ISO file on your PC.  Use the free Image Burn application to burn the ISO file to a DVD disc.  Do not use a CD because the newly-created installation disc will be too large to fit on a CD.  Reboot with the DVD disc after you've zero-filled the hard drive.  XP will load all necessary drivers for your particular PC.

Re: HDD dead! presario 5100CA - unable to restore

Is it pausing, or do you get some kind of error?

If it's pausing, let it be and see what happens.  If you're getting an error, more than likely it's the CD Rom drive that is bad.

Re: HDD dead! presario 5100CA - unable to restore

OP could load XP on another PC, so the CD is fine.  If XP will not load after the hard drive has been zero-filled, then the only other solution is to slipstream the necessary drivers to the installation program.
