Some models of Hp notebooks can toggle the default use of the fn key, which means if you need to use Fn with F2 for it to work, or just use F2 to control brightness.
Note sure if this applies to your model but have a look at this document

Hi,
Just had the same issues on an Envy 17 3277nr , Dual boot Win 7 Pro 64 bit and Ubuntu 12.04 , this maybe late for you but for others coming to find an answer go and look here :
http://adrynalyne.blogspot.co.uk/
Basically a registry setting is wrong , mine worked fine with the HP drivers , I then added the AMD/ATI 13.1 drivers and still all was good . Then my WiDi asked me to update the Intel HD4000 driver so it would work correctly , this worked fine and even my WEI score improved BUT now I had no brightness control ![]()
Use regedit from run or start bar search and change your entry as below ( do a system restore point first incase you get it wrong and need to revert ) simply highlight " FeatureTestControl " and right click to modify the value.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr
The value on mine was f000 , I changed it to ffff like above shows .

Then do a reboot and hey presto !
F2 and F3 ( No Fn button needed ) adjusted brightness again after the fix on registry.
Goodluck,
Dave.
P.S If this has helped you give me a Kudos on left it will help others find it easier too ![]()
