Mine is a 64-bit system and the new hdd is a western digital scorpio. Both drives is/were 500gb. I used the Recovery Disks to reload the OS to the new hard drive so I don't understand why this problem occurred. Have checked Microsoft sites, tried to download System Update Readiness Tool prior to manually downloading Service Pack 1 for Win 7 but received an error prior to install (0x8000247). Tried to get help from HP but since the laptop is no longer under warranty, I must buy a warranty from HP at $14.99 per month for 12 months before they will talk to me about a fix for this problem. That part really makes no sense, particularly when it was THEIR recovery disks that failed me. I won't be fooled by a false sense of security by HP again. I've stood by Compaq and HP for many years but this time they've hurt me. I didn't whine when the drive went bad and I had to pay for a new one because I didn't buy an extended warranty - that was my fault. But recovery disks that don't work are HP's fault and I shouldn't have to pay twice for an operating system.
If there is anyone out there who has heard of this and has a fix I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Have you checked your drivers page at HP to see if an updated driver may be needed before installing SP1?

When I run win update I get an error message that says the service is not running - but when checking control panel, the service IS running. I've also tried downloading updates manually including SP1. To that I get error 0x8000247. I've tried drivers and MS fixes and everything I can find, even BIOS updates. Ty for your suggestions.

There appears to be an issues relating to WD HDs and some Intel drivers. Please download and run the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver and restart your system.

Try running Windows Update again. If it doesn't work, follow these instructions, then try again.

Genius...genius, I tell you! I was beginning to think there was no answer. Thank you so much for posting this. Truthfully, when I scanned the email on my cell phone, my first impression was "no way, can't be a driver issue". But, what do I know? I checked it out and sure enough it worked perfectly. I am so happy I can move on with the set up of my computer peripherals. My thanks to each of you who responded, as well. Live well and be happy!
