From here on I want you to use Power DVD10 as it's a better product them Media Smart DVD, MS DVD is just a watered down version of a Cyberlink Power DVD product.
From experience with others here on the forum McAfee is the problem, it needs to be totally uninstalled first before doing anything else. You may need to go to their web sight as there may be a special tool that is used to uninstall it.
Install CCleaner as it will be needed later.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Uninstall all and any Microsoft Redistributable packages from "Programs and Features, note that you may have allot of them.
Uninstall MS DVD and Power DVD10 and then run the registry cleaner from CCleaner as many time as necessary until it finds nothing.
If you haven't already done so save Power DVD10 to the desk top and install it from there, not from a temporary folder. (Note that the link is clean so you don't have to worry about getting a virus, the same goes for CCleaner)
Restart after the installation.
Load you Blu-ray by using the release button on the Disc drawer front, let Power DVD10 play it automatically with out opening the program.
At this point you should be able to reinstall McAffee, but no one has ever reported back to me that their Blu-ray player has stopped working ounce they reinstalled McAfee. So hopefully in will continue to work.
If Power DVD10 still won't install you may need to unpack the files and do a manual install. If you need help with that, post again.

My BD-Rom Drive (F

I need to see what BIOS version you're running before we continue.
Type in "system information" in the search box with out the quotes and a page will come up like this.
-------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
There are only two versions available for your machine F.12 and F.13, so it will be either one of the two.
If it's F.12, do not update it on your own, wait for my instructions.
Also, what is the name of the Blu-ray you're trying to play and have you tried any other ones or do you only have the one ?

Just thought I would write an update since I had to get a replacement DVD player from HP when the original blu-ray player failed (sometimes extended warranties are useful!)
After installing the new blu-ray player I could not get medismart DVD to work, it hung in the Would you like to update so I just installed the powerdvd10 from the link above and blu-ray disks now play on the new blu-ray player.
Just FYI my original blu-ray player was a BD5501 new player is a CT30K

@ Xylinx
I had a look around and I found you only have two posts, including this one.
If you want more help with your Blu-ray's I need more specific info on your problem (symptoms) and your complete model number would also be helpful.
eg Media Smart goes into a perpetual update loop...
I am also going to assume that you tried Power DVD10.
Installing a trial of Total Media Theatre 5 is also very helpful when you post the results.
http://www.arcsoft.com/totalmedia-theatre/
It doesn't rely on pre-written software from Microsoft, it's written form scratch and it does better at getting the job done.

For some reason, my HP mediasmart blue ray/DVD will randomly not allow a blue ray disc to play. I tried the fix called sp50778 and followed the instructions only to discover that there was an installation error 1628 so I don't know what to do. I thought I would try one other thing, but if you can provide a different solution, that would be great.

Was the install file (sp50778) a Media Smart DVD version or was that Power DVD 10 ?
If you haven't tried the Power DVD 10 solution, let me know and I will give you specific instructions on how to install that.

Haggis,
Hoping you have some advice for me as well
I have hp dv7-1183-cl with firmware F.2D. I've had this laptop about 4 years and the first 2 the blu-ray worked great. I got a nasty virus on the system so I finally just reinstalled win7 64 completely. Since then, I've yet to get blu-ray to work.
This is the BD-ROM BC-5500S drive. I've installed powerdvd10 along with the mediasmart application. When I insert a blu-ray disk, I hear the drive spin up but nothing. Looking at the dvd drive d: shows no title of the disk and clicking the drive ejects the current disk. I've tried a bunch of my blu-ray's but no luck.
The dvd functions work ok. I've tried a million different suggestions from all types of forums. Maybe the drive just went south but that seems like an odd coincidence after the reinstall of windows ![]()

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my dv7-3079 and did end up having to get the blu-ray drive replaced
What you can try is the dos command diskpart (run as adminstrator) and then diskpart and the list volume
command below shows a blu-ray disk loaded 41GB and then a standard DVD+R
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 F HELIUMD1USA UDF DVD-ROM 41 GB Healthy
Volume 1 SYSTEM NTFS Partition 198 MB Healthy System
Volume 2 C OS NTFS Partition 282 GB Healthy Boot
Volume 3 E RECOVERY NTFS Partition 15 GB Healthy
Volume 4 HP_TOOLS FAT Partition 104 MB Healthy
Volume 5 D DATA NTFS Partition 298 GB Healthy Pagefile
Volume 6 G FAT32 Removable 3835 MB Healthy
Volume 7 I FreeAgent G NTFS Partition 1397 GB Healthy
Volume 8 H FreeAgent G NTFS Partition 465 GB Healthy
DISKPART> exit
Leaving DiskPart...
C:\Windows\System32>diskpart
Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7601
Copyright (C) 1999-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: DADS-LAPTOP
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 F Repair disc UDF DVD-ROM 267 MB Healthy
Volume 1 SYSTEM NTFS Partition 198 MB Healthy System
Volume 2 C OS NTFS Partition 282 GB Healthy Boot
Volume 3 E RECOVERY NTFS Partition 15 GB Healthy
Volume 4 HP_TOOLS FAT Partition 104 MB Healthy
Volume 5 D DATA NTFS Partition 298 GB Healthy Pagefile
Volume 6 G FAT32 Removable 3835 MB Healthy
Volume 7 I FreeAgent G NTFS Partition 1397 GB Healthy
Volume 8 H FreeAgent G NTFS Partition 465 GB Healthy
DISKPART>
If the standard dvd info is reported but the blu-ray does not there's a chance the the blue laser has failed and you will most likely have to replace the drive.
