My client has an HP Mini 1000 notebook with an XP operating system, and it is extremely slow, 30 seconds to load. In addition, there is no disk drive with an easy path to upgrading that I know of. How does one upgrade this notebook without a disk drive?
I am debating whether to recommend trying to upgrade to a Windows 7 operating system, or just have her buy a new notebook.
There is the concern that all data from the XP driven notebook might be lost in the upgrade.
Any feedback on this dilemma? Upgrade to 7 or start over new?

Hi,
30 secs to load, that's quick, not slow. Please note: no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7 therefore data needs to be backing up before a clean install. There are 2 common options: use external optical drive or use USB flash drive to install the new operating system (W7).
Given the cost of this upgrade from XP to Windows 7, my suggestion: buy a new machine, only under $300 and pay $25 for a stick of 2GB of RAM or moving up to a bigger screen laptop.
Regards.

Thank you. I figured something like that. Amazing quick and good response.

Not that I looked real close, but can any of the jacks on the rear of the HP Mini 1000 be connected to a Cable box, or is it locked into a "wireless mode of transmitting/receiving"?
I am trying to upgrade the speed, and a hard-wire connect seems like it would be faster than wireless.

Hi,
This is the place for a LAN (CAT5e or CAT6) cable (under cover):
