HP Mobil Internet on Compaq Mini 110-1010SO

Hi,

if I'm right I can install HP Mobile Internet OS. on my brand new Compaq Mini 110 - 1010SO. Is the HP MI OS is free ? Where can I download the recovery image (for usb drive) for HP MI ?

Okay, now I'm faced against a new problem >D From here I can't use FTP connections, is it possible to get the recovery image itself due http download ?

Thanks a lot in advice. (or set a HTTP proxy to use for the HP recovery creator ?)

Re: HP Mobil Internet on Compaq Mini 110-1010SO

Hi, Mspike and all;

I can't recommend installing MI from the usb image, UNLESS, you have a tested  recovery set in hand.

If youre using windows, you're probably OK.

The mini 110 and 110c is not suported in any of it's variations for installing MI from USB.

(see  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/siteHome?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dest_page=product&product=top    The Customer Care page)

They do not lie when they say " If your operating system is not listed, HP does not currently have software or driver downloads available for your product for that operating system,..."  However the Rep's. don't know that HP has no solution and that we're on our own. They insist either that all minis are alike, and the one image will work fine; or that you couldn't have purchased it with MI -( even with a scanned invoice!)

I know this from experience.   I ordered a 110-1000 from the web store, and it arrived just as advertised.

The MI OS is neat and worked very well for the 5 days I had to play with it. -- it wouldn't play with the Epson Stylus CX8400 though.

I new that I'd eventually (soon) mess it up hacking it and would need a recovry method. So, I tried the "onboard" method that they all come with.

However--HP hasn't tried it yet on the 110's, so they can't believe that you get "the drive selected is not bootable" when selecting the SDD.

So, I started asking for, and HP eventually directed me to the USB recovey image and installer. (It took 4 rounds of customer service to get it)

(from an ftp site - not the support website.) The installer would not create the USB image on 2 computers, (The next morning, for some reason, it started working, so I was able to make the USB recovery drive.)

The USB stick boots, and recovery image writes to the mini just fine; but you'll find plenty of forum whining about the boot hanging @ 20%.

The image is not correct for the 110 hardware, burt HP can't believe the customers. They stick solidly to their outdated flip-chart bible.

I recreated the drive 2 more times from another image (same checksum) and get the same issue - hangs @ 20% of boot indicator.

I have installed my Ubuntu to another USB and it runs live, and then installed it to the HD, resizing thd MI partition. It boots and runs fine. Sound, and wired LAN don't work, Wireless seems to though.  BUT IT BOOTS.

Now I'll download one of the "mini-approved' versions and see if I can get everything to work. Then I'll be making an XP install --  I'll be wanting to get a copy of the XP drivers from someone !  :smileywink:  I really do want the MI os back. Apt-Get / Gdebi found and installed most of the non-hp-selected apps that I like; but need the XP dual-boot of a customized install. Currently it looks like I'll have to settle for less.

(I will gladly edit the comment regarding lack of MI suport as soon as I find an image that works.)

Bye,

Scott

Re: HP Mobil Internet on Compaq Mini 110-1010SO

Hi Scott !

Thanks for all your help. By the time I read your comment I have already reached that you :smileyhappy: I downloaded the HP linux image, installed it, and had the same problem with boot up ! I used my ubuntu live image, to boot up, and I hacked grub to shows up, cleard the HP splash image.... that's how I found out that the problematic kernel modul is w1 (if I remember right) Anyway after disabling this module, my mini booted and sound worked (only headphones). After I had this half working system I decided to try out ubuntu netbook remix, and that is fine. Now I have my Wlan back, have sound (still just headphones, but as I read somewhere the new alsa package solve this thread...) and normal boot. So if you still want to have a linux system I recomend ubuntu netbook remix. The installation method is the same, but I can send you everything for that, if you need. Hopefully HP will come out with a working image for this machine too... but anyway, now I won't mess up this well working system. (even the built in mic can be used, I usually uses skype :smileywink: ).

Peter.
