I am experiencing a frustrating problem with high to 100 percent (100%) cpu usage on my HP Pavilion dv9925nr 64 bit laptop. The problem occurred intermittently with the original Vista 64 bit OS that came with the computer. I even destroyed a Western Digital external hard drive due to the issue (since replaced) by forcing a shutdown when the system was still writing data. The problem is worse now that I moved the machine to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (clean install, not upgrade). I hope a HP Expert can help identify and resolve the problem.
When the problem first started, I thought the culprit was my Apple iPhone. Since the initial occurrence, I have figured out the problem occurs anytime the system writes data to any external mass storage device. This includes a Western Digital 1 TB external drive, my Apple 32 GB iPhone, and a 4 GB Verbatim flash drive. Using Process Explorer, the CPU cycles are being consumed by Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC) and Interrupts (both consuming about the same percentage of cycles ranging from 30 to 49.9 percent).
When the problem starts, the system exhibits delayed responses to keyboard entries (including CTRL+ALT+DEL), mouse movements or clicks for 5 to 10 seconds. In addition, any system sounds are stretched out for several seconds (imagine the default OK sound stretched out for 10 seconds). You can hear every tone from when the sound starts to when it finally finishes.
Currently, the only way to recover the system is to shut down and reboot. Afterwards, it will run fine until I either plug in my iPhone (or iPOD) and attempt to sync, or after a file transfer from my hard drive to my external hard drive or flash drive. I can usually read from my external hard drive or flash drive without any issues, but writing to either device will inevitably trigger the condition. My iPhone, however, always triggers the issue once it starts to sync.
During this problem, internet access still functions, but my interaction with the browsers (both Internet Explorer and Firefox) are filled with delays.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue. Again, the problem did occur under the OEM version of Vista 64 that came with the machine, but I could never identify the pattern.
Thanks!
Gerald

dv9925nr has a nVidia chip[set], and you probably had 4G or over ram, matches the description of this Microsoft KB:

I am an HP employee.

Your lead solved my problem. After installing the hotfix, the problem has been eliminated. I no longer experience the issue with any of my flashdrives, external hard drives, or my iPhone.
I greatly appreciate your help.
