Re: HP Webcam in Windows 7

Yeah Nicolle, I have had the same problem for about a year. I have a HP G71 notebook & my integrated webcam won't come up on the device manager.

Re: HP Webcam in Windows 7

Hi KC,

First off, I recommend you take a look at the document all the way at the bottom of this Post about Connecting and Fixing Webcam Issues.  Soak all the information from it.

THEN, if you still have problems,

I recommend that you visit your computer's website and see if you can get a new copy of the webcam software for your computer.  It will be either the MediaSmart or the YouCam software package.  BTW, they are not interchangable - one is not "better" than the other; it's a matter of which computer use which software, is all.

It's possible that the driver is being stubborn for some reason:  It didn't load correctly, there is something else in the way (another way of saying the same thing in the final analysis, though it is different), you somehow did load the wrong software (thinking that "well, one didn't work, let's try the other").  It is possible that the software is OK but there is another service that is hanging things - that's a bit more of an issue...

First, clean up the "driver may be bad, hung, not installed right" problem by cleaning it out and starting over (if possible).  You can tell me all about what kind of computer and OS you have, or you can take a look at the instructions I'm sending (below).  First, go and see if you can find your software - if yes, download it.  Once that's done, go and delete the current driver.  Install the new one.  Reboot.  Check and see if it works.

You should ignore the BIOS stuff unless you have reason to believe your BIOS is out of date.  Updating the BIOS is not bad, but it's a big step unless you have a good reason to do it.

========================================================================

Install Webcam / BIOS Update

Drivers control hardware connected to the computer (wired or wireless).

Software controls the programs that interact with the User.

The BIOS initializes, identifies, and structures, the computer during the boot process.

If you are having problems with the current webcam driver, you may elect to remove it from the Device Manager.

NOTE:  Do NOT remove any driver unless you have the means to replace it.  See the section on downloading the new driver.  Make sure you can download the new driver before you remove the old driver from your computer.

Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager > Imaging Devices >

Right-Click HP TrueVision HD (Webcam) > Uninstall > Delete

Go to the Computer’s website to download the new Driver:

  • Go to the top of the HP forum page to Support and Drivers
  • Enter your Computer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Look for category Software - Multimedia
  • Select the appropriate Cyberlink YouCam Software OR MediaSmart Webcam Software – if available for your system
  • Save the appropriate *.exe installation package on your computer

If you are updating the BIOS for your computer at this time, continue and select the BIOS:

  • ·         Look for category BIOS
  • ·         Select the appropriate Bios Update for your computer (usually the most recent)
  • ·         Save the *.exe installation package on your system

NOTE the name and the location - the *.exe file(s) will likely save to "Downloads “

  • Install the Software / Driver installation package(s):  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

BE AWARE:  The BIOS is the heart of your system.  Use ONLY the BIOS intended for YOUR computer.  Ignoring this advice and installing incorrect BIOS into your computer will effectually turn your computer into an expensive paperweight.   You can safely update your coputer’s BIOS – just make sure it’s the BIOS for your computer’s product number.  There is no such thing as “close enough” with the BIOS.

NOTE:  There is sometimes a lot of information at the computer’s website.  Be sure to take an extended look at what’s available.

Re: HP Webcam in Windows 7

[ Edited ]

KCornell5,

Afterwards...

If you are still having issues, add a Hard Reset.  You notebook may be "hung" in a weird way.  The reset can clear out a variety of issues that other steps cannot touch.

Hard Reset:

Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer.  This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’ program ills.

  • Disconnect all external devices first.
  • Remove AC power and the battery
  • Press and hold power button for at least 20 seconds
  • Reinstall only AC power for first startup.
  • Power on - Log in
  • Next time you shut down the system, put the battery back in.

You can ignore the bit about leaving the battery out; if you like - just put the battery back in the first time and be done with it.

Try this...

Download New Driver for your Webcam:

If you are having real issues getting your webcam to work, if you have recently upgraded your Operating System, or if you accidently lost your software, you may have to reinstall your webcam driver software.

NOTE:  If all else fails and you cannot find a driver for YOUR Operating System, note that sometimes Vista drivers will install and work on Windows 7.  Vista came first - Windows 7 and Vista remain closely related.  Select Vista as your Operating System, then check for driver availability.

Go to the top of the HP forum page to Support and Drivers

  • Enter your Computer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Look for category Software - Multimedia
  • Select the appropriate webcam software – if available for your system
  • Save the appropriate *.exe installation package on your computer

NOTE the name and the location - the *.exe file will likely save to "Downloads “

  • Install the Software / Driver installation package:  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

NOTE:  There is sometimes a lot of information at the computer’s website.  Be sure to take an extended look at what’s available.
