My webcam on DV7-2173cl running windows 7 has stopped working. Tried reinstall of OS and could get it to work once in a while, for a while. Then image in webcam went to red only then failed all together. Tried reboot into safe mode and it showed the webcam in the device list. Then restarted and again, same thing. Works for a while then stops showing screen images.
Sometimes, comes up with error message at boot that this USB device can work faster if connected to a 2.0 device. But there are no external USB devices connected. So I suspect that the camera goes through the USB controller chip set and either the chip set of the camera is going bad.
Computer now shows that a USB video device is on the port but the webcam software doesn't recognize the device as being present.

How difficult is it to replace the webcam? I tried to contact tech support because I have a problem with "your battery is not charging, but your laptop is plugged in" .. or something equivalent ..
I was told by hp tech support that my warranty is expired even though I just got the laptop in April 2012.
Anyway, every time I turn the computer on, I get a "usb device not recognized" message.
I tried downloading cyberlink software.
I removed the unrecognized usb device using the device manager, but the device manager keeps recognizing it, but not acknowledging it. Can the webcam be purchased (and removed .. and installed) separately from the lcd screen? And, is it expensive?
Thank you in advance for anyone taking the time to respond. I am frustrated as he%$!
Jennifer

" tech support that my warranty is expired even though I just got the laptop in April 2012. "
you nned to contact HP and fregister your purchase date, then it take a few weeks for it to be entered into the HP warranty database, then you can get warranty support.
