It looks like windows 7 home basic is only sold in emerging markets now.  My suggestion would be to buy a retail boxed upgrade to vista home premium (assuming your hardware supports it).  This should make you eligible for a $10 upgrade to windows 7 home premium.  The vista to 7 upgrade would go through Microsoft and not HP.

Do I have this straight?  You suggest I buy a Vista upgrade for $130, so that I can then upgrade to 7 home premium?

I bought this HP Pentium dual-core, 3GB, 250 Gb laptop after the magic 6/26 date, as I was convinced their was no need to wait till Oct 22nd.  So, I already purchased one Windows Vista OS and now I must purchase another?  I guess I didn't read the fine print, but I can see why HP and/or MS didn't want me to wait until Oct 22 - they could get me to pay for 2 copies of Windows.  If that be the case, there will be no Windows 7 for this system.

Thanks for your reply.  I don't mean to vent at you, but I feel I'm stuck with Vista.  Fool me once ...

I would have asked for a Windows refund if I had been wiser.

You have it mostly right, although I have seen the upgrade for around $75, so it would be about $90 total for the 2 upgrades (not cheap but better).

I was somewhat aware of the limited upgrade path for vista basic, and avoided it with extreme prejudice.  However I can understand your frustration since it seems like vista basic should be listed with an huge asterisk noting the upgrade limitations.  Given such information you would likely have purchased it with home premium pre-installed for a mere $30 (or tried the "I do not accept the EULA" method and requested a refund for the OS).

Thanks again.  Note that MS's documented upgrade path as of July 2009 does show Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Home Basic as a supported upgrade scenario.  It says nothing about 7 Home Basic not being available (that I can see).

The cutoff date for the discount is really the 26th of june I thought that was the day when the upgrade to windows 7 was free. I cannot believe my luck I bought my laptop on june 18th this is the very first computer I have ever bought new. I either build them or bought used lol figures I would miss the dang day by 8 days.

I will have to read all the posts here I guess I am kinda confused on the windows 7 thing. I bought a pavilion dv7-1285dx on 6-18-09 it has Vista 64 home premium. I may be eligable for a discount upgrade? just not the free upgrade if I would of purchased it 8 days later?

I recently purchased a Dv2-1110us from Fry's and attempted to order the Windows 7 upgrade from the HP Windows 7 Upgrade Option site and noticed they were attempting to send me a 32-bit version of Win 7. This is unacceptable. My machine cam with Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Their site even states that Vista Home Premium 64-bit will be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Any one else having this issue?

 Where is HP drivers for Windows 7? I am student and have access to MS software through ELMS. Now we can download Windows 7 OS, so the only thing missing is those drivers!!!
