Hi Razzaq4gist,
Identify your Compaq notebook with the entire product name or product number. How to identify your HP notebook.
Invoke the BIOS and test run the hard disk diagnostics. If the diagnostic passes then you should either make a Vista startup repair disk on another PC or perform a System recovery. The System recovery will return your notebook to the condition it was in when it was delivered to you. A startup repair disk is a non-destructive repair and the System Recovery is data destructive.
How to invoke the BIOS:
Press the power button and tap the Esc key.
In the menu onscreen choose F2 (System Diagnostics) or F10 (BIOS). If your notebook has UEFI installed choose F2
In BIOS Go to the Diagnostics tab and select Primary Hard disk test.
The results of the test will determine your next step as I described after the first sentence.
Posts your results here so other members can ultilize your troubleshooting and results to resolve their own issues.

If the diagnostic did not find your hard disk then it has indeed failed. It must be removed and replaced to return your notebook to a useable state..
Is your notebook still within the one year standard warranty? (A hard disk is a warranty item that can be replaced by the owner)
I do hope that you made a recovery disk set or USB recovery media. You will need it to use with the new hard disk to install the operating system and drivers for the notebook system board.

How to order a recovery disk set from HP. They are not expensive. The average cost is around $25.00 USD.
You may also order them from an HP Partner (i.e. computersurgeons.com or other)
This is considerably less expensive than one of the alternatives. That would be to purchase and install a Microsoft Windows operating system. Why pay more than $140.00+ for an operating system that you already purchased when you can buy a copy of your original OS complete with all drivers for far less?
