When I try to install XP by booting from XP install CD, and after some time screen goes blue saying something like "windows has been shut down to prevent crash... if its the first time, try restarting the computer..." and those 0x000000000 - which the last one being 0x00000007. Then i tried Recovery Manager if there is a solution for formatting a certain drive, and installing back Vista. And i could only find system recovery, which, as to my understanding, formats the entire harddisk (incl. C,D,I,M partitions), and only then installs a copy of Vista.
The question is how do i format my C: drive and install a copy of XP? (while leaving other partitions intact)
Solved! Go to Solution.

To pass BSOD you need to sliptream ICH9 sata driver.
I recommend you to use VISTA, this laptop was built for VISTA.
However, if XP is essential for your applications, try this thread
Please update your BIOS to the latest version.
The old BIOS has compatibility with IDT sound chip.
If you had intel video graphics, here
install MS-UAA before intel video driver, the rest of the drivers should work for your model
Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I'm also having second thought on downgrading.
But the core problem lies in that I cannot format my C: drive (OS drive) without touching other partitions.
The question is how do i format my C: drive and install back a copy of Vista? (while leaving other partitions intact)

PS: i find formatting and reinstalling is the best way to get rid of unwanted programs that take away resources, malwares, spywares, and probably some viruses (suspect i might have).

Sorry, I dont understand you correctly.
Yes, a clean installation of VISTA would be the best way if you wish to get ride off unwanted programs from HP
If you could do a clean installation, by assuming you had VISTA DVD installer, why you still have difficulties formatting only C and leave the rest intact?
What VISTA installer are you using?

No, I don't have a Vista Installation DVD, just have an XP installation CD which gives that blue screen-error. The laptop came with a program called Recovery Manager and I solely rely on this program.
Though the documentation strongly suggested to make a recovery utility on an optical media right after byuing the laptop, I didn't make one. There is option to make it but would it be of any good after all these time? would it be virus or malware free?
From your post I understand I have to have some external means of installation. Is it right? Do I have to get hold of a random copy of a Vista install DVD or designated installer DVD for my laptop like the recovery CD/DVD?

Lets discuss VISTA first,
If you do NOT have VISTA DVD installer, there is no way for you to do a clean install of VISTA.
HP recovery discs will NOT do a clean installation.
Try using orev guide in notebookreview.com for clean instalation of VISTA, here
Then about XP,
As mention in posted thread, you need to sliptream ICH9 sata driver.
If you did it right, you'll pass BSOD error.
Good luck

Thanks, went over the clean installation guide and the first thing i'm gonna do is create those recovery dvd-s, then download vista image from the net, backup drivers etc, backup my vista license, and then install vista - just gonna follow the guide.
Thanks again, will report on my advances.
