How to install Windows XP on HP Pavilion DV6-2020ec

How to install Windows XP on HP Pavilion DV6-2020ec

STORY

I bought this ntbk last week with preinstaled Win7, but I like WinXP (I LOVE *nix) so I choose multiboot . Newer ntbk (with Vista or Win7) has ahci always enabled (what I saw) so I expected to disable AHCI in BIOS or use nLite to put AHCI driver to install CD. Disabling AHCI in BIOS is impossible - there is no such option, so second way via nLite was right for me. BEFORE DOING THS, CREATE RECOVERY DISK !

ATTENTION: I am not responsible for any issues which might occur (HW issue, etc..) during this so YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN - this is very DANGEROUS, so if you do not need XP, stay on newer windows with manufacturer issued drivers

STEP1 - ACPI

When I boot from CD WinXP Pro SP3, I always get to BSOD with acpi.sys driver. Googled around a bit & I found M$ article how to disable ACPI at install time (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B224826&x=13&y=16) - I expected use nLite so editing instalation files was not problem for me, so i disabled ACPI in txtsetup.sif like this:

wincdroot\i386\txtsetup.sif

[ACPIOptions]
ACPIEnable = 0
ACPIBiosDate = 01,01,1999

NOTE: I realized that disabling ACPI make XP unusable in some ways. After install, you can not shutdown PC normally - it show shutdown screen with text "It is now safe to turn off your computer" - so you have to shutdown it manually by button all the times. Also standby/hibernate is not operational. Maybe there is some solution how to get it working, no problem for me NOW.I also found that XP show my CPU as single core.

STEP2 - AHCI driver

I was looking for AHCI driver and I found  "General Guide to XP Downgrade For HP/Compaq Consumers Notebook" (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=OS&thread.id=12776)

I tried it with "3. Difficult Models" in the article at the bottom of the page, no luck - I always get BSOD saying STOP.....STOP message said, that XP could not find HDD so AHCI driver was not correct...

I booted up preinstaled win7 and i found in device manager hardware id of SATA AHCI, in my situation "VEN_1002&DEV4391&SUBSYS_3636103C"

I downloaded "AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver" from ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40046.exe, extracted it and copied RAID7xx to another location and started editing:

file: RAID7XX\txtsetup.oem:

add to the section  [HardwareIds.SCSI.Napa_i386_ahci8086] line

id = "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV4391&SUBSYS_3636103C", "ahcix86"

add to section  [HardwareIds.SCSI.Napa_amd64_ahci]line

id = "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV4391&SUBSYS_3636103C", "ahcix64"

file: RAID7XX\x86\ahcix86.inf:

add to section [ATI] line

%NapaDesc%=Napa_Inst,PCI\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV4391&SUBSYS_3636103C

and that's it

Now start nLite, choose integrate drivers,  insert multiple drivers,find your RAID7XX folder and choose only x86 type

I will write here some more info...

STEP3 - Preinstall steps

1) boot Win7 and shrink partition in disk management (defragmenting is always good step before)

2) Windows installation  drive letter hack

If there is any NTFS/FAT partition before new installation partition (win7 in my case), windows installation occupy that letter and you have to install on another letter than C: . I boot up some live linux and change type of the first partition to type 83 (Linux) using fdisk utility. Than installation looks a bit strange but it release C: drive letter for installation partition...

STEP4 - InstallXP

nothing to say... just installation...

STEP5 - Postinstall steps

just boot again linux and using fdisk utility change type of win7 partition back to original type 7 (HPFS/NTFS)

Re: How to install Windows XP on HP Pavilion DV6-2020ec

Hi,

You need to slipstream Your Sata drivers (only x86 drivers) with nLite.

Here are Sata drivers  for You. Just unrar this drivers with Winrar.

Here You will find *.doc file with guide how to slipstream this Sata driver with WinXP. (You will need to open this Microsoft Office).

Here You will find *.pdf file with the same guide. (You will need to open this Acrobat Reader. Download link to this program here. Choose Your system there and Your language.).

Be sure also that You are using at least WinXP SP2 version. If you haven't got SP2 version here you can download this service pack and here You've got guide how to slipstream this file with XP written by nLite.

In nLite You can even burn Your new XP CD with those changes.

All drivers You will find in Cheryl's guide General XP Downgrade Guide for HP Laptops_Part 3.

If You will have any problems let me know about it. I will try to help You as fast as I can.

Ok.

I will tell You then only one thing. This Sata (AHCI) drivers which I posted above are not the sam which are in general guide. They wil work for 100%.

Guide how to slipstream them in doc and pdf file is also written by me with every step which should be made.

Please check it.

Drivers from general guide You will use after successfull installation of XP system on Your model. :smileyhappy:

I do not think that driver are different from the general guide, also I can not find hw id (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV4391&SUBSYS_3636103C) of my AHCI controller in your inf file, but I can try it for you, if you wan - let me know...Also other drivers from that guide is not for my ntbk (for example audio driver is not for me, wifi still not working in XP)

But maybe you know about some solution for that ACPI problem mentioned above - I realized that XP show CPU as single core, but it is double core CPU.

In XP in "device manager" I see under Computer only "standard PC" but there should be probably something like "ACPI x86-based PC"

I am not driver developer or so on, but I think that is ACPI related problem...

Any idea ? And do not say me to buy new ntbk  :smileyvery-happy:

Sorry man, but it looks you know wrong. I was right - IT DOES NOT HELP ME

Instalation stopped before EULA agreement at STOP: 0x0000007B  - I belive that is AHCI driver problem (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B324103&x=13&y=5) .

I  do not want try it again because I solved AHCI driver problem my own and it take a lot of time and resources for me...

What about ACPI, you know something I shoud think about ?  :smileyvery-happy:

PS: If you are only "Kudos point" hunter, I give you vote but leave to another article...

Re: How to install Windows XP on HP Pavilion DV6-2020ec

@ETxtreme,

Daniel has a good intention to clear up what you have stated in the first post.

Your steps to install XP in AMD platform are not a necessary step if you are using XP-SP3 as the guide recommended.

However, please noticed that due to Nlite capabilities many "expert" people are misused it, slipstreamed unnecessary drivers that lead to problems that posted by you. From IMHO, there no significant problem with AMD sata driver posted in the guide as well as daniel's sata driver, both should working properly.
