I HAVE A CORRUPTED BROWSER!!!

I seem to have downloaded a virus which resulted in me having a corrupted browser. I have since removed the virus, but I cannot log into Window Explorer (I get an error messgae). I was informed that I need to "run a Recovery" to get rid of this issue. Can someone please help me with the steps necessary to accomplish this?

Please note I am a computer layman so PLEASE keep the answers at a walk-thru level, also I only have access to THIS computer so I can't do any multi-access type things.

I would appreciate ANY help you guys can give!!

Honestly, with your problem description and computing skills I would say just run the HP System Recovery.

If you would still like assistance though, please provide us with the exact error message that you are receiving.

Re: I HAVE A CORRUPTED BROWSER!!!

How exactly is that done and will it result in a loss of my current files?

error message: IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error

The instruction at "0x001982d" referenced memory at "0x001982d". The memory could not be "written"

This pops up when I click on the Yahoo mail icon or the Mozilla firefox icon or the Windows Explorer icon, but I can access the net via AOL, so I think the corruptionexists on my IE browser.

Re: I HAVE A CORRUPTED BROWSER!!!

Okay, we'll try a few things here.

Reset Internet Explorer

  1. Type the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER: inetcpl.cpl
  2. The Internet Options dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
  5. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
  6. Start Internet Explorer again.

System File Checker

Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, right click on the Command Prompt option, then click on the Run as Administrator option.

If you haven’t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn’t!) you will be asked for authorisation. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.

In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow, then press Enter.  You’ll see “the system scan is beginning”.

The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files.

Re: I HAVE A CORRUPTED BROWSER!!!

Hmm...I guess I should've asked which operating system you're using....so is it Vista or XP?  What is your notebook's model #?

 Start Search (Vista Only)

Okay then, we'll just have to scrap the above steps.  Are you able to open Internet Explorer at all?

Re: I HAVE A CORRUPTED BROWSER!!!

I would have to suggest that you try downloading either Firefox 3 or Google chrome browser.

If you are able to do that and you are able browse to the web, go to ESET.com and use their free online scanner.(look on the right-hand side of the web page)

The online scanner can delete the threats (from your description it sounds like a trojan) that can cause issues like the ones you are having.

regards,

erico
