Unfortunately not but you dont need to download and install it. It's only taking a fraction of a second to check and tell you its available. Just uncheck this update (I know how you feel - it's driving me nuts too!) If you do ever forget to untick it, just decline the Ts & Cs when it goes to install and it will quit - had to do that a few times!

Re: IE 9 and Consumer Notebooks

Why not use a different browser instead? Like Mozilla or Chome. Does it make any difference if you do so?

Fast HP always makes me happy!!!

Re: IE 9 and Consumer Notebooks

Having difficulty with the preloaded IE in my new laptop - the home page (HP/MSN.CA) doesn't function properly, and I can't change it to the regular msn.ca page.  Also, tried to download firefox to use that as a functional browser, but it is not downloading.  For some reason IE doens't seem to allow the download?!?!

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: IE 9 and Consumer Notebooks

Probably an incompatible add-on.   Try starting IE in No Add-ons mode to test this idea.   If you don't know where the No Add-ons mode shortcut is or in case using your default Home page is also a factor,  Run...  (press Win-R and enter:smileyhappy:

iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff

I think the Address bar is usable in that state--in which case definitely try to use it to retest your problem scenario; otherwise click Stop (Alt-V,p)  or go somewhere to get out of the No Home state and then try to reproduce your symptom.

A known problem add-on which has a related effect is  Constant Guard, which I understand is distributed by some ISPs as part of their installation package.   In that case I would recommend uninstalling that program and see if that solves your problem in the more general case, e.g. using IE not in No Add-ons mode.   I don't know anything more about the program.   E.g. perhaps it could be reconfigured to be less interfering and then left to do whatever else it is designed to do.

Good luck

Details?   Sounds like a possible  DNS  problem.   E.g.  try avoiding redirects that might be implied by "regular msn.ca page".    What is in the Address bar when you try that?   Are you already logged in with a Live ID by then?

Again, you are probably giving us your interpretation of something that you are doing and seeing.   What are the exact symptoms?   Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.

Re: IE 9 and Consumer Notebooks

Hello wlegrow:

Well isn't this a pickle? Inernet Explorer 9 is harder to use because you never see down loads. Most of the time it doesn't corporate with web-sites.  First we need you to be able to launch Internet Explorer 9 tool bar. Right now you are telling me you do not see it. Because if you did see it you would be able to change and restore Internet Explorer 9.

On your Inernet Explorer 9 on top left side you will see three icon's House ( Home Page) , Star (Favor List) and a Lock Washer( Tool Bar Controls Section) .

I want you to left click on Lock Washer icon. Now a list appears please go down the list and put a check mark on every thing. Repeat Left click Lock Washer every time one is checked off. Now you can easily see the tool bars. Makes it easier to find and adjust your settings. Right click on Washer Icon well bring you another set of short cuts. You can explore thoose later on. For now we need to get you rolling. Now that we enabled everything so you can excess it easer.

Now click on right click on tools go down the list at the bottom click on Internet options now you should be on General's tab window click on Use default botton, You should see this now above. http://www.msn.com/?ocid=OIE9HP  This is HP MSN home page.  Now your msn home page is done. Lets move on.

Below that check mark box. Delete browser and history on exit.  Click on delete. While you are here. Just gets rid of history and cookies. (Witch is temporary files) Click on settings This is where you manage your add on at. If you need assistant in this section let me know. I only use one tool bar that is Bing as my search provider rest of them are dissabled.

Now I am going to tell you how to restore your Internet Explorer 9 back to Oginal Setting. Click on advanced tab. You see Reset you just click on this and it resets your Internet Explorer default settings. Now you know how to enable your contol tool bar. You can always come back here and reveiw these steps at any time. Privacy tab is a good one to set up. Click on privacy tab ckeck mark the first two boxes and click ok.

When you download things there is a yellow tool bar at bottom of page it will give you the options to view down load and to where you like the down load to go. I always click to view another window appears lets you see the download progress and when it finish click on run. Plea

Re: IE 9 and Consumer Notebooks

frrw - First off - Please don't talk to me like a child - you're being very condescending and not at all helpful! :smileymad:

You don't know me or have any idea what my competency level is on a computer, so your attitude does more harm than good.

As far as your directions go - they are unclear and doesn't reflect reality. "left click on Lock Washer icon. Now a list appears please go down the list and put a check mark on every thing."   What are you talking about?  I think you're looking at a different version than I've ever seen!

I am quite competent at using IE 9 - I have been using it since it came out.  Downloads work properly on other sites, I don't have problems with them, and haven't had any issues with any browser pages until this one that's pre-loaded on the machine.   BTW - you're wrong about never seeing downloads - I am notified about them all the time...

I had already deleted the history and defaulted back the settings... come on - if it was that simple, I wouldn't have asked!

The HP/MSN homepage is what I'm trying to get away from, as it doens't function properly - I see the page, but the active aspects of the page are broken and do not function and I can't navigate away from the hp page and just get the regular msn page!

I am a certified Microsoft professional... so please give me a break.

Also, if you're going to help someone make sure you check your spelling and grammar.

so, next time - save the attitude and try and be a little more helpful.

Sorry - yes, that was unclear - it comes up, but the active content in it is not functional.  whether I'm logged in or not it is the same way....

Again, you are probably giving us your interpretation of something that you are doing and seeing.   What are the exact symptoms?   Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.

Okay... when I go to the mozilla site - click on download, the download page comes up, and I get the notification if it doesn't start in a minute, click here... well, nothing comes up saying it's downloading, I click on the link, taking me to the software choice site, I click on the one I want, and I end up being directed back to the downloading page.. although, it never downloads - nothing shows up in my downloads folder.  No other notifications or errors... just doesn't work.

I have already cleared the history and reset the settings to default...

@ Ward

You first.   "Mozilla site"  is not a precise enough description of what you would have in your Address bar.   My point is that your symptom may be due to DNS aliases and redirects which you might be able to avoid by using a more specific URL, e.g. one that starts from where you want to get to and not just a vague suggestion of it.   Yes, the latter may sometimes work and be more convenient to use but what I am suggesting you try could be more reliable, in any case it would help you improve your symptom description.   The same kind of analysis can help you connect to hosts which you are only trying to access via links in other pages.

Since you apparently have IE9 you could also use its Developer Tools, Network Capture tool to get an even more precise picture of the URLs involved, even if you don't see them in your Address bar.
