Yes, I believe there was a recall, but I think it's expired, see this post in another forum.

You may contact HP directly to find out, or you can send it in to this guy where he reflows the solder with this infrared machine.
You should get another couple years out of it.
Honestly though I would just cut my losses and buy a new machine and not an HP. You can get a nice gaming laptop for not too bad of a price that will have 2 or 3 fans it and is better designed all-around.

This one is way over-kill for most people, but it's not too badly priced for a bit over 1400.00$.

Just found this and it is over, click on the link in the first post.

What I never quite understood about all of this is why NVIDIA was to blame, they just produced the video cards and supplied them to HP. HP should be held fully responsible for using the crumby solder when they assembled the mother boards.
Or did NVIDIA supply the solder, anyways, it doesn't matter now. ![]()

Thank you very much for the info. It was very helpful and completely answered my question. After reading about how quickly some other computers broke, I guess I should consider myself lucky to have gotten as much use out of it as I have and as you suggested cut my losses now. At first I was disappointed that I missed the settlement but then read about one person's computer being replaced with a $250 one. I am not missing out on much compensation anyway.

Have you heard of BAKING the Motherboard at 400 degrees for 15 minutes to cure the problem?

Yes I had heard if that and wrapping it up in towels until it shuts down from overheating, using a heat gun to reflow the solder or a small hand held torch.
The oven thing is a bit extreme ! ![]()
The heat gun method and protecting the rest of the board with aluminum foil is probably the most sane approach, but anyone can do what they want.
