Keyboard Backlight button

Hello, I have had my HP Envy-14 beats edition for about a year and my fan has stopped working. Therefore, I had decided to open it up and see what was wrong; I came to the conclusion of buying a new fan and replacing it. However, that is not the problem. After opening it, my keyboard backlight button, Fn+f5 is no longer working. f5 works fine, but the keyboard backlight will not turn on. I'm afraid it's because I opened up the laptop. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS, the product name is HPENVY 14 Notebook PC, the product number is XZ211UA#ABA. If anyone could help, that would be great. I'm starting school in a few weeks and I need my laptop to be up and running as soon as possible. Thank you.

I apologize if I posted this in the wrong board.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

There will be a separate smaller (much smaller) ribbon cable for the back-lights. Make sure that it's plugged in all the way and seated properly. Some simply plug into the motherboard, while others are released and held in place with a locking bar.

I am at work right now and when I get home I'll check out the media library and see what's going on.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

Here are some screen shots of the back light ribbon cable and yours does have a locking bar on it, so I would say to check that to make sure the cable is fully home, it's square in the ZIF connector and that the locking bar is fully closed.

Here's the guy grasping the back light ribbon cable.

Here is also the link to the HP Media Services Library where I got the screen shots form.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

Thank you so much for your response! I was afraid no would! I cannot seem to find the ribbon cable corresponding to the backlight. There are 2 smaller ribbon cables but they seem to be for the power button and the track pad. I will post up pictures of it tomorrow!

Hmmm... :smileyindifferent:

It should be pretty obvious if there is one, and you said you replaced the fan _ the model that I am looking at has two cooling fans. Is this your model ?

You would have had to unplug it to get at the fans _ you didn't tear it off did you ? :smileysurprised:

The fans are screwed right on to the mother board, you would have to to totally disassemble the machine to get at them.

Here is the service manual that I found when using the number you gave me. ( XZ211UA#ABA )

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

If I am looking at the photos correctly it should be about in the area I circled. I may consult with some one to figure this out.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

I apologize for the last response, I had just moved back to school and I was unable to get access to internet. The port that you had circled is the ethernet port and the wire that you had circled is a wire connected to the mouse track pad. Would you have any other advice? It would mean so much if you could help me solve this problem!

Thanks again.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

That's all I have, unless there is a yellow cable for the backlit keyboard in that area then I don't know what else to suggest.  :smileysad:

I can only go by what I see in the Media Library and if the cable is not in that area on your machine as what the library suggests, then I can't really do anything further.

If you totally removed the keyboard and took some good photos of all the cables coming out of the bottom of the keyboard then I would be able to tell.

Re: Keyboard Backlight button

Okay, so I finally received my replacement fan in the mail today and I took apart the whole machine. I found the ribbon wire for the backlight and I have fixed it. However, my dilemma now is that even after replacing my fan, it still is not working. I am refering to the fan on the right when you open the laoptop. the fan on the side under the keys "delete", "home", "pg up", etc. Also, now, my right and left keys aren't working. Can you help me once again?  Or should I start a new thread because this is a different problem? :smileysad: Thank you so much for all you have done for me!
