Laptop boots to external monitor on startup and screen output key does not work

For the most part, I tend to have my HP Pavilion dv9700 laptop plugged into and external monitor via HDMI. However, recently my laptop just boots to the external monitor and I have to mess with the screen resolution settings and randomly press Fn + F4 (screen output key) until it outputs back onto the laptop screen. When I look at the screen resolution screen, It'll detect the external monitor and won't detect anything else. It will however say, "connection available on Mobile PC Display" (assuming that's the laptop screen) but I've tried to no avail. I think the issue might be the FN+F4 key since that's what usually fixes it randomly. That and when it doesn't work, my laptop's speakers make an unpleasant sound. I've tried installing the graphics drivers several times but it only gives me a temporary fix. If there's anyone who can help, I'd appreciate it and sorry for the beefiness of the inquiry.

My Specs:

HP dv9700 notebook PC

Nvidia Geforce 8600 GM

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Once again, thanks and I appreciate it.
