My laptop is about 18 months old. I get the #10008 replace hard disk error also. I've tried to run the diagnostics test, it tells me smart check or smart disk is fine. It tells me that the quick check and comprehensive test both fail.
I read that I can buy a Vantec product to help get files off of my laptop. Is it possible for me to get my files off the laptop if windows won't even let me open my laptop to see the windows screen?

Yes it is possible but it need an expert to recover it from a broken harddisk.
This task would be expensive!
Have you try using USB harddisk case? If you are lucky your data can copied with minimum cost.

Sound like you may 'just' have had a crash on your hard disk. The crash may have happened inside a Windows directory which is why it seems so devastating. You might not need to replace your hard disk and you might just be able to get your files back.
It all depends on whether you are able to run chkdsk /f , a Windows disk repair command or not.
Your options are:
1. See if you are able to, from the BIOS, get to a 'recovery screen'. On many HP and Compaq laptops this is F11. If you can do this, there is usually an option to check your disk. If this can be done, then this can even recover crashes where the crash was inside a Windows directory.
2. If you can't do that, then you could try inserting your Windows DVD\CD in and try to boot from that. From there, there should be options to repair your Windows installation. Can't be any more specific since you don't say which Windows you have.
3. Failing that, all is not lost. You may need help from a nearby geek. Get the geek to take your hard disk out. Attach it to another computer. Run chkdsk /f from there.
I reckon you've got a good chance of recovery. Take it as a warning though. Once you've recovered, your disk might fail again. It could be soon, or it could be a couple of years later. Get an external backup going.

I am wondering if that fixed the problem or they were sending you down the wrong path because I was updating BIOS on my hp 6730 b and it did the same thing. it powers up and will not show anything on the screen. No numbers password nothing . Just black screen
