Can you put a price on important data? I'd spend $30-$40 bucks on a good imaging software like BootIt NG. You can run BING from a USB drive or CD, and burn the image file to another partition on the hard drive or to CDs/DVDs. BING also comes with a non-destructive partition manager tool.
Most HP PCs come with a tool to create the restoration CDs/DVDs from the backup partition.

The HP MI image is different than XP and Vista.
To launch recovery, press [ESC] at bootup.
The HP recovery image creator is now available for download.
You download either the XP based or Linux based utility, and it will format a 2GB or larger USB Thumbdrive so that it can be used to reimage your HP Mini with MI.
Here is a direct link, or you can go to hp's support page, enter your operating system and find it under Software and Drivers.

I tried calling support and they talked me through the hitting esc key durring boot. that failed and said "no bootable device. Please insert a bootable floppy and hit any key." at wich point i was told i had to send the netbook back at my expense for them to reinstall. and it no longer booted.
after doing some online research i got the usb image created and booted from it and it installed but now when it boots the progress bar goes about a quater of the way and the machine locks.
Any one get a restore to actually work?

Hi there Cryin'
Yes you have the correct and dare I say "official" rescue method.
HP never tested the on-board recovery, as you are correct in having nothing to recover with. Floppy??? Right! SDD? Sorry an invalid choice!
I have posted my saga in another thread, in September '09, and truly unless HP has had a real awakening, they don't realize that the image they provide doesn't work with the current production units. After 9 rounds with HP tech support, I finally was directed to the HP restore image. Which was the exact image that Brian (I think) provided weeks earlier in this forum. It installs great, but won't boot. Again an untested solution that they profess as golden. (Not Brian's fault - it worked for some units , just not the 110's) It would be nice if they would actually step onto the production floor and snag a copy of what is really being burned onto the disks!! How simple is that. I would really like to retry MI , though I'm not sure I'm willing to wipe my drive with a rescue to try it. if they do bring a valid image to the table, I hope it's only 4Gig in size. However, with the way global warming is going, hell will freeze over first.

Currently using UNR 8.o4 and 9.10
LAN and Sound work great on 9.10
Wireless works great on 8.04
