Hi andrew3587, the easiest way I know is to go to Bellarc.com and download their free for personal use Bellarc Advisor.
Run the advisor, it will give you the product key.
Now Write the key on your recovery media, or OS Disc, or write it on a sticky on the bottom of the laptop, cover it with tape!
Good luck, and reply back with your progress, please.

@andrew3587
Please remove your serial number and any other number, this is an open forum, someone may misused it.
I understand completely about your COA product key problem, I use a clear tap to cover it for protection.
Better call HP directly, hopefully they have a good database, since Microsoft did not have records for OEM COA.
Do you still have HP recovery partition? It can be used to run vista recovery, no need to find out the product key.
@compenthusiast
Running Bellarc Advisor will show the current product key, the one that reported having problem.

There is no database with stored product keys...even if there was, they would not hand out that information. If you don't have the product key...you'll need to perform a system recovery (won't ask for the key) or buy a new OEM copy of Vista or upgrade to Windows 7.

@Kalt
MS have it, but not the OEM one. Are you sure HP does not have it?

Hi everyone, with all due respect due the previous posters, and without seeming a (I love to use these words) churlish pedant:
Wouldn't Bellarc indeed work---he's not having trouble with a key---he can't read his key (if I read his post correctly.
Respectfully----

The key in the system is most likely a Volume License Key and not the actual key on the bottom of the notebook.
...and no HP would not have the key.
