On my 64-bit laptop, I found that HP Update is not very good at installing updates in the right order if you tell it to install more than one of them at the same time but one will only install correctly if some other one is already installed.
I was finally able to install most of them by telling HP Update to install only one update at a time, then doing a system restore if that update installed but caused problems, before trying to install just one other update again.
I don't remember if a few Microsoft updates had to be installed this way as well.
Also, I found a few HP updates that simply would not install before a new version of HP Update that became available later, and a few where I had to tell HP exactly which update I was trying to install on which model of laptop in order to find out that those updates were not actually needed.
I finally installed all of the updates that are actually needed for my laptop, after several attempts to find the right order in which to install them.
As for the mute button turning orange, I would take this as a signal that you need to press at least one other volume button the next time you want sound from your laptop.
