My HP Pavillion dv4 turns on, but screen is dark and Caps and Scroll lock lights flashing

I didn't properly shut down my computer last night so when i went to turn it on last night too, all the lights turned on and the sound of booting occurred but the sound went soft and then the CAPS lock and Scroll lock button lights flashed about every 5 seconds.  I read the message boards and I seen the common solution is to take out the battery and wait a while with the laptop shut down.  I've done that and the problem still persists.  I think the problem is an error in the modules of the laptop (what I've read from messages boards).  Any help?

The battery needs to be replaced but I haven't replaced it since it'd still worked

make sure it's plugged in with power cord that should override the need for battery to boot up... once the system starts press the F2 key that should let you boot into the hardware diagnostics.. then test your harddrive for errors.

I never use my battery and only use the power cord. My lights are still blinking.
