When I tried to restore a friends laptop, I learned that the hard drive was not recognized by to bios. I put a new hard drive into the system and now need an operating system to install.
The computer is a Compaq Presario V6101US running Windows XP Home Edition OEM. Where can I get a valid copy and how much is the cost?

You can try www.hp.com/support to order a set of Recovery CD.
Windows XP is an obsolete operating system, probably it is not available.
You might have to install Vista on it.

Try here: http://www.computersurgeons.com/SearchProducts.asp
They are trusted by many as a source of HP recovery media for older models.

Thank you, I followed the link and found a restoration copy for $27.00. I really appreciate the lead.

Unfortunatly, I did contact hp support and they could not help me because XP is obsolete. The support tech suggested that I post here in the forum for more information, if it is available.
