Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

[ Edited ]

The chipset driver from Intel and HP are for both 32 and 64 bit and even though the one form your HP support page says 64 bit, it doesn't matter when it comes to the chipset driver, the same applies for the BIOS.

Just use the one from your HP supports page.

 http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-102471-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...

 It's file number is sp56156.

 Your Question :

So if I decide to try it I have found the SWsetup folder and I would highlight it and click the "burn" tab on top of the window bar ?

That would properly work, or you can simply copy and paste it to the DVD drive in Computer ounce you have a disc in there or even just drag it over to the CD/DVD ROM or USB driver.

When doing it this way you're not actually moving the file, but Windows automatically copies the folder to it's new destination when dragging to a new source like a USB drive or DVD.

I never use the "Burn" button in the heading bar, I just drag things where I want thing to go. With series burning projects like Blu-ray I don't use Windows, I use Imgburn. (getting off topic here).

Flip the laptop over and you will find the product key on the bottom.  xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Physically write it down and save it with your important papers _ label it what it is. There are oodles of people here where the key is worn off and ounce it's gone it's gone.

 Your Question :

and your saying that SSD`s have there own drivers ?

Your new laptop will automatically recognise the SSD, the drive and the laptop both have SATA interface and quite possibly the laptop is SATA 3, so ounce the SSD is in there it should really fly, 30 seconds and under for a boot time _ possibly even 20 to 15 seconds.

I`m really really new to PC`s at least new ones , the last PC I owned was back in 1988 and it was a Tandy clone.

WOW, you sound older then me He He He !  :smileyhappy: (I'm 47), I had to look up Tandy _ that was a Radio Shack brand.

This is me here : I am 44 in that photo...

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

LOL :smileyhappy:

Yes my friend , I am older , I`ll be hitting the big 60 in November. ( But I definitely young at heart :smileywink: )

I`m not so sure that older is wiser , I`ll see if I can master this then I`ll let you know , just doing this may add a few extra years LOL !!

I poped off the back cover and noticed there is room for another drive , but I would need the "second drive kit" from HP , I` m not seeing a maintanence manual for the M7 , but I think it`s just a DV7 so if I can find the manual and get the part number [s] maybe I`ll go with twin 512`s ~~!!.

That would be down the road but all I would need is the caddy and the cable and screws , I think that all comes in the second drive kit.

O__well , I`ll think about that later , first things first.

On the Mac side of things , not as easy as I thought m burning an ISO image to a disc , I have to go though the drive utility to do it , no biggy ( I hope ) , but it been a while since I burned a disc , trial and error.

I`ll keep you up to date , I think once I get the discs burned (  and write down the PK from the bottom sticker ) , I will try it on the disc that is in there and see how that goes , it`s a real quiet 1TB HDD ( of course it also 5400 -RPM ) but I think I could even make that one fast without all the added stuff , and BB has MS-HO Student -DVD box on sale for 99.99 , so I could get Word.

Talk later , thanks again for all your help and providing the links !! :smileyvery-happy:

Take care ,

Gary

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

Hi HaggisCat  ,

I have now downloaded the X64 IOS file ( W7 - Home Premium ) and I have that on one DVD-R , then I have also burned the SWSetup file from the c: directory from the M7 Laptop.

I have 2 discs left and some room left on the SWSetup disc , can you think of anything else I should copy before I run the IOS install disc ?

I was wondering about my Norton Anti Virus that is set up , all the other stuff I added like Safari and iTunes I can download again , so Norton is the only one that I am concerned about.

Would it be in the SWSetup folder ? / I have no idea , there are some files that are not familiar to me.

Also when I insert the ISO disc > Press the Power Button > then Shift+F9 , Tap it until the BIOS screen comes up and Navigate to boot from CD/DVD ?

What I want to do now that I have the ISO disc burned is to reinstall it on the drive ( HDD ) that is in the M7 also at what point will I be asked to enter the alpha-numeric Product Key code that I will write down from the bottom of the notebook?

If I am " good to go "  after , then I will feel more comfortable about installing an SSD , and then she should scream !! :smileyhappy:

Thank you so much for all your help and advice :smileyvery-happy:

Talk later , take care ,

You may want to export your "Favorites" onto the disc form Internet Explorer, post again if you need help with that or you can find a "How To" article in Google.

I was wondering about my Norton Anti Virus that is set up , all the other stuff I added like Safari and iTunes I can download again , so Norton is the only one that I am concerned about.

You can simply go to Norton and install what ever version you have and use your product key to activate it. You should have a product key. It probably is in the SwSetup folder. It's all abbreviated,  just keep opening g folders until you get to some icons and it says "Setup" beside them. Right click on the setup file and go to properties, click on "Details" in the heading bar to find out what it is. If you still can't figure it out Google is your best friend here.

Would it be in the SWSetup folder ? / I have no idea , there are some files that are not familiar to me.

As mentioned above, Google is very useful here.

Also when I insert the ISO disc > Press the Power Button > then Shift+F9 , Tap it until the BIOS screen comes up and Navigate to boot from CD/DVD ?

Come on  now, this will be the third time I explained this to you.  :50

This is correct, but no "Shift" key, just the f9 key by itself. Remember to close the DVD drawer with you burned ISO in place before booting up, the drawer won't close itself. He He He.

What I want to do now that I have the ISO disc burned is to reinstall it on the drive ( HDD ) that is in the M7 also at what point will I be asked to enter the alpha-numeric Product Key code that I will write down from the bottom of the notebook?

Not exactly sure, but you can always enter it later, and if you leave it blank and continue the setup Windows will assume that you want to run a 30 day trial. If you leave it Windows will start bugging you to activate your product.

When you get your SSD just jump right in, you won't have any problems, the whole thing is very self explanatory.

If you forget something you can always start over if need be. If you screw up, you can simply start again, you're not going to hurt the SSD by reinstalling Windows a few times over.

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

Hi HaggieCat ,

Thank you for your reply and your continued support , Hey 3rd time the charmer right !! :smileyvery-happy:

Seriously , I do so much appreciate your help , I really doubt that I could have gone this far without it.

Just to be on the safe side , before I try booting up from the W7 disc , I thank I will download most of the drivers that might not load under HP Set-Up , just in , like the Web Cam / Track Pad / Finger Print ( biometrics ) stuff like that and bur the .exc files to a blank DVD.

Will , looks like another learning experience thing is going to be happening :smileywink: .

But like I said your instructions are great , sometimes I think I might lack just a little in the self confidence area !

Take care , and thanks. :smileyhappy:

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

This is probably not related in any way to what you are discussing however I do have a question about my new M7.

I recently set aside my HP pavilion i've had for 6+ years. On that PC I was able to plug directly into the microphone port in the rear to record straight from my guitar amplifier.  However, using my new (awesome) M7, I cannot get any kind of playback.

Is there anyone that might have a solution to this, aside from breaking down and purchasing an expensive microphone? haha.

Thanks!

You may do that if you like or ounce W7 is installed you can simply download and install them then. The important one to have is your chipset driver, install that first, then you WiFi so you can connect to the internet if need be and probably your video driver so your resolution is correct. Sometimes Windows will install a generic one and everything will look correct, but not too often.

Here is a another guy more or less with the sort of thing that I am helping you with now.  :smileyhappy:

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

@ Spakinton

With your amp plugged in go to Sound in the control panel and in the heading bar click on Recording. Click on external mike and mark it as default _click on properties and make sure the levels are up.

Don't have much experience with this sort of thing, but it's a place to begin.

Re: New HP M7 / How to ?

Hi HC ,

I can`t begin to thank you enough for all your help , so thanks !! :smileyvery-happy:

Just for the heck of it I tried a "trial run" and at first I forgot to leave the draw open.

Anyway , tried again this time with the draw open.

I pressed the windows key > then - restart > hold the esc key > got to the basic bios screen and then closed the tray and it started loading from the dvd.

Then I read all the stuff and click next and I know I want a Custom Install and 1 Partition , so at some point ( if I went further , I did not this time ) would I be asked if I want to format or partition the c: drive ?

It also must have noticed what was on the HDD because it ask about some HP stuff and the recovery partition.

Basically , I just want a clean install and a blank HDD , and take it from there , going to try again tomorrow , maybe !

O__ well , wish me luck ! :smileyhappy:

Take care and thanks again for all your help.

Gary

PS:

Please forgive me , but I may have to post again ( of course ).

PS # 2

That's interesting that this works to boot to the W7 disc _ what ever works, You can also use a bent out paper clip to manually eject the drawer through the small hole in the face of the drawer if you forget to leave the drawer open.

would I be asked if I want to format or partition the c: drive ?

It won't ask this with your new SSD because there is no "C" drive. There will be nothing on the drive, no partitions, no "C" drive, no HP Tools partition _ nothing. You don't even have to partition the drive of formal it, the disc will do that automatically for you. You can do it if you like, but it's not necessary.

You can create some custom partitions later if you want or do it now.

If you don't like what you have done, you can simply start over.

It's impossible to screw it up, because all your doing is putting information on the hard drive. It's not like you can corrupt it like a BIOS chip install.

You won't need any luck, it's very easy.  You need luck if you're competing in the Olympics , but not here _ computeres are things of logic, whether some  people agree with me or not, and I know many people would ! :smileysurprised:

Kenny ate up four pages, lets see how many you can do.  :smileylol:

and your welcome... HP does give some free perks for my time... :smileyvery-happy:
