Re: Numerous problems with laptop

Hi!

I hope that it's not too late for you to know. Avira will install a trojan in the pagefile of your computer. That is the one detected by windows defender. However once it is corrected by windows defender, files or windows operation will now be affected. If you run Avira in your computer it will not tell you that you have been infected. But if you remove your HD and test it in another computer running Avira you will know that it is infected.

That is why I stated that the system should be scanned by eset's online scanner and/or download and install the trial version of eset's smart security.

No offence intended, and none taken.

The point that we were trying to make is that many free or not mainstream antivirus or firewalls are dangerous as they lull the user into a false sense of security.  There are many different ones out there some good and some just junk.  Symantec used to be good, something like 5 years ago, when you had better control and when they stood behind their product.  Has anyone had an issue where you had to contact them for support?  No tier 1 US support, and if it is a virus, Trojan malware, they want to charge you $89.00 to get rid of it.  To help yourself, they have buried the help files on their site along with the removal tools. Another bad habit Symantec has is they have become like Microsoft with their coding.  They acquire a company and incorporate their product into their line, but never clean up the code.  When you install or uninstall, their installer vomits all over the hive, and when you uninstall, there is tons of leftover Symantec trash that is never cleaned up.  You end up doing it all by hand.

Currently the better firewall and antivirus software companies are:

Eset for 32/64bit antivirus and firewall

Agnitum for 32bit antivirus and firewall

Sure there are others, but the two listed above are the ones that I trust.  McAfee can be good, but has issues.  AVG is good, but definitions are slow coming.  IBM had BlackIce very good firewall, but went end of life in 2008.  CA has a firewall and antivirus and it is okay.

Re: Numerous problems with laptop

Really?! My boyfriend and I have used Avira for years on numerous computers and have never had a problem with it. Although, all of the computers we've had up until now have had XP and my laptop has Vista. That's the only difference.

I sent it to HP to see if they could fix it. When I called on Saturday to put in a service ticket I found out that my warranty through them still had 9 days left, as opposed to the 4 days I had left with CompUsa's warranty.

Hopefully the can fix itand I should have it back sometime in the next week. I will definately look for better antivirus though!
