The cd/dvd drive is missing from my pavilion OS. The drive does not show up in the explorer view and when the drive is chosen in the BIOS to boot, it does not. I have read all the posts on the filter edits but that has not solved the problem. Is there another solution other that a reinstall? The CD/DVD category does not even exist in device manager.

Remove the CD/DVD drive, after unplugging power cord and removing battery. Boot up without it, then shut down and reinstall the drive. Many times this will allow the BIOS to redetect it.
If you need help with removing the CD/DVD the Maintenance & Service Guide is HERE

are these the steps you took with the filters? if there are upper or lower filters remove them both.
Windows Vista<script type="text/javascript">// loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); // </script>
- Click Start, and then click All Programs.Collapse this image Expand this image

- Click Accessories, and then click Run.
- Type regedit, and then click OK.If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.Collapse this imageExpand this image

- In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8. - On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
- In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site. - On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
- Exit Registry Editor.
- Restart the computer

Pavilion dv6915nr CD/DVD drive missing (Windows 7 Enterprise, No filters No Device Manager show No Microsoft Fix It detection)
I have a temporal but consistent solution.
Once:
Hp downloads use the current bios update.
Download the Microsoft tool Devcon.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272
Every time that the Optical Drive is missing:
- Restart the Drive, Ac power off, battery off, Optical Drive off, Optical Drive on, battery on.
- Like Administrator in command-line type and enter:
bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECK
(Thank you HP for the no signing support driver, no clicks for HP)
[Devcon.exe installs Directory]/i386/Devcon rescan
Thank you Kudos 10 clicks for you effort.

None of this resolves the UN-BOOTABLE ATAPI DVD Drive issue, I've been having this issue for at least 1 year and a half. This machine will just NOT BOOT from DVD, internal or otherwise. Yes, BIOS is set to detect and try to boot from these devices before the on-board HD but nothing boots other than basic CD which of course is worthless when it comes to trying to restore the system back to factory original settings from the HP Recovery Disk set.
Anyway, I'm glad I know how to get around these freaken issues, but wish I could fix the no boot from DVD issue, I'll try something else, Ill report back.
Well all is not bad, I report a successful re-balling of the NVIDIA chip for my dv6915nr. I'm pretty pleased with that outcome!
