It seems that this is a hot topic of conversation here on these forums but for myself I appear to be one of the first with the DV3500 to ask so here goes.
Spec as follows .. INTEL mobile 45 Chipset , T5800 processor
I have to manage many different pieces of equipment , many of which do not support vista ( surprise surprise)
The option to downgrade is vitally important . Creating a partition is simple enough . So I boot from XP disc and start the install procedure. As many of us here know that when you get to the “ Starting Windows” part of the install the PC will BSOD.
I have done a fair amount of research on this .. some users can get round this problem by changing a setting in the BIOS to enable IDE support.
Unfortunately the DV3500 does not have this feature in the BIOS so during the XP set up process you have to press F6 to add a 3rd party driver. ( thats one way of doing it .. the other way is to slipstream the driver into a bootable copy of XP .. but in essence it’s the same thing)
Intel have a driver for my chipset .. Mobile 4 more specifically the ICH9 E/M SATA controller.
Drivers found here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.asp
Go to number 6 in the list “ 32 Bit floppy controller” and download it
Extract these files to floppy and when booting from XP disc press F6 , this will then give you the opportunity to install the driver when it’s finished loading it’s native drivers.
Intel seem to have updated these drivers recently ( Dec 08) there were some drivers from July 08. I have tried both of these and still arrive at the same BSOD.
I have tried calling Intel but they wash their hands of it because HP “May “ have modified the driver or hardware.
HP wash their hands of it because they only support Vista.
Does anyone at all know of work around to get XP installed ( I have even gone as far as removing the drive and placing it in another laptop where XP was installed successfully .. put this drive back in the HP and BSOD. This points the finger directly at the ICH9 SATA controller.
I have updated the BIOS in the hope that there was some extra features or added the IDE legacy mode with no luck
Does anyone have a UK customer satisfaction team I can call .. As all I seem to get through to are people who bleat the “XP is not supported” spiel.
Many Many thanks in advance

Hi I am facing mostly the problem. Here the posting i have done in an other forum:
"I have the same problem, bought a HP Pavillion dv3550ez and the first thing i have done, was to clean the hard disk with Mandriva Linux 2009 and to install it. All is running perfectly, usb, wlan, touch pads, nvidia and so on, only the fingerprint sensor is not working, but i do not need it anyway...
So far so good... then i wanted to install XP SP2 on the first partition of the HD, which i left free.
I ended after XP loaded all the drivers with the same error message which is posted above:
"A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SUT DOWN TO PREVENT
DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER
IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE SEEN THIS ERROR SCREEN RESTART YOUR
COMPUTER. IF THIS SCREEN APPEARS AGAIN FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
CHECK FOR VIRUSES ON YOUR COMPUTER. REMOVE ANY NEWLY INSTALLED HARD
DRIVES OR HARD DRIVE CONTROLLERS. CHECK YOUR HARD DRIVE TO MAKES SURE IT
IS PROPERLY CONFIGURED AND TERMINATED.
RUN CHKDISK /F TO CHECK FOR HARDDRIVE CORRUPTION, AND THEN RESTART YOUR
COMPUTER.
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0X00000000) "
I cleaned the MBR, i formatted the partition, i tried the Bios to change the Sata option, which is not available..
... to shorten it, i read all the posted solution above, but i am not sure what is the correct one for the dv3550ez.
The HD is a ATA Fujitsu MHZ2250B, which Mandriva is telling me, may be that helps...
Thanks for any help
CJM"
----
In the meantime i slipstreamed an ATA driver with nLite and .. it worked, i could install XP SP2, but it stucked after the second booting with a black screen... may be some drivers are still missing....
So i try to get these drivers to force it again... and if not ... Mandriva Linux and Open Office is a very nice solution ;-))

Hi
I've got the same problem. I am unable to install XP Pro SP2 on my dv3550ez!!
Same error:
"A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SUT DOWN TO PREVENT
DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER

Did you finally find a solution?
Where did you find your ATA Driver and haw did you install it during the Windows XP Installation?
At the time you have the choice to install a Raid-Controller driver?
Thanks for your help, because i need Windows XP on this machine.

Yes I fix it!
Install the correct Intel Sata drivers as the Windows XP Installation provides you with F6.
You can find the driver with the floppy here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?P
