I have a brand new Pavilion dv6, Windows 7 Home, 3rd Gen I7, etc. PowerDVD 10.0 was preloaded. It has never worked. Here's are some of the things I've tried to get the software to work:
1) spent 3 hrs w/HP support trying various things including restoring the entire system, uninstalling PowerDVD 10.0 and reinstalling. The uninstall and reinstall worked...literally until I was off the phone with the rep. Then it failed. Again. Could not summon the energy to call back for another multi-hour session
2) on my own, tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times - software still wouldn't work
3) tried upgrading to PowerDVD 12.0. Couldn't get it to work.
The symptom is that I will insert a DVD in the tray (regular DVD or Blu-ray - doesn't matter). I can hear the disc spinning and soon I get the message that "PowerDVD 10.0 has stopped working."
It's very frustrating that this "entertainment" laptop won't play my media. Anyone know what's going on here?

What anti virus and firewall programs are you running ?
Will the DVD work in Windows Media Player ?
There are lots of things to try, but will start with the simple things.
Personally I had paid for Power DVD12 and did not like it at all ! ![]()
I am now using Total Media Theatre 5, and it's a much better program, it doesn't rely on Microsoft Visual packages to work, it's written from scratch. Visual Packages are pre-written software that vendors use to save time when they write their programs.

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials and I think I have the standard Microsoft firewall up.
When I try to play a DVD using Media Player it says it won't play or support DVD playback.
Maybe I'll try that Total Media Theatre 5 you mention. I'm not sure how more much time I want to spend fiddling with PowerDVD. Unless you have some easy ideas for me to try.

Try installing Total Media 5, save the file to the desk top and install it from there, not from a temporary folder. With TMT 5 Windows firewall will block some files, allow them in. TMT 5 will also ask you to reboot the computer, make sure and do this.
After it's rebooted go to "Auto Play" in the Control Panel and make that TMT 5 is selected for Blu-ray playback, if it isn't select it to do so and save the setting.
Try a Blu-ray movie.
Where this is heading is that it sounds like the CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive is faulty. You have reinstalled the OS so all the drivers were installed and it still does not work.
Try TMT 5, but it looks like you have to send the machine back to HP for a service call.
Personally if it's still with in 30 days of purchase I would just get a replacement _ you simply may have a lemon _ who knows what else is wrong ???
I am surprised that the HP tech support guy didn't have you send it in, it seems obvious to me that it's a hardware problem. When a DVD won't even play using Windows Media Center even after reinstalling the OS, that points to a hardware issue

Don't pay the 100 bucks for TMT 5, "Google" "TMT 5 coupons" and very often you can save your self 20 or 50 even bucks.
