Can anyone help me? A year and a half ago I purchased a brand new HP dv6-3118ca notebook that came with Win7 Home Premium pre-installed (even though one ad at the time erroneously stated it came with win7 Professional). I have many, many applications installed and personalized/configured for my use, but Win7 Home Premium will not allow backing up to a network drive and other features that I require; so, I figured the upgrade approach was/is the best solution and I purchased a Win7 Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium to Professional. As expected, what I received was a whole lot of packaging containing a bar-code with a 25-character key to be entered. I started the action and entered the key. Within seconds that key was verified. I then accepted the EULA and started the upgrade process but within a minute or two I received a message that the upgrade had failed and that the key I had entered was 'for an edition of Windows that does not work with Windows Anytime Upgrade'. Have HP and Microsoft screwed me, or does anyone have a solution?
Thanks in advance.

You need to contact Microsoft about this issue.
Upgrading from Home Premium to Professional is an allowable upgrade path.
Were both versions the same? I mean were both versions 64- bit or 32-bit? If they were not then that can indeed cause issues. Microsoft Support should have answers or solutions for this.

Thanks very much for the reply Erico. My understanding was that the anytime upgrade did both 32-bit and 64-bit, but perhaps I was wrong and perhaps I was sent the wrong version. I attempted to contact Microsoft Support via the phone number included with the upgrade, but their support apparently operates during 'business hours only' and I was unable to get an answer. If I can get a break I will try tomorrow, as I also tried online but was also unsuccessful as there was apparently a 'country' issue (I am in Canada and the notebook was purchased in Canada).

Thanks again Erico. In the interim I am trying to ascertain with complete certainty if the upgrade is supposed to work with both the 32 and 64 bit OS. All indications so far are that it should, but...
Again, I will have to call MS tomorrow as their support at the number provided is 'closed' and I cannot get anywhere online.
Regards.

Closing the loop on this in an effort to pass along the solution...
Erico, as I was unable to contact Microsoft Canada support, I decided to contact Microsoft US support. I was given a case number and immediately connected to tech support. I decided to allow him to access my system and he tried the upgrade a couple of times, running into the same problem - but then he used msconfig to turn off most of the services I had running in the background and restarted the computer. The upgrade subsequently proceeded properly. Afterwards the computer was returned to a normal startup and is now running Win7 Professional.
Submitted FYI...
