Hello everyone,
I've recently purchased a HP Envy 17 Notebook Laptop 3002ea model, yet I'm having problems connecting an external display in order to extend my desktop display.
In this instance the external display is a BENQ FP93 GX, which is connected to the laptop via a HDMI to VGA adaptor cable.
Here comes the problem, when I turn the monitor on it says "signal cable not detected" and promptly goes back into hibernation mode.
I've updated the BIOS for my laptop to the latest version, I've also double checked to ensure that the HDMI / VGA cable is correctly plugged in, they appear to be all connected properly.
I'm not 100% sure what the problem is, I've gone into the computers control panel and tried to add a 2nd external display, yet it doesn't appear to be working as the monitor will not come out of hibernation.
Could anyone help please, am I missing something?
Thanks
John

Some monitors you have to manually select the hdmi input, some are automatic.
Some of the Automatic detection monitors do not always work as intended, try restarting the PC with the external monitor conneced

Thanks for your reply, the cable is an adaptor cable in that it leaves the HDMI slot of the HP laptop but it is plugged into the VGA socket of the monitor.
So its not a HDMI to HDMI cable if you see where I'm coming from, there is no HDMI input on the BENQ FP93GX, I know the monitor does work because when I try it on an IBM laptop with a standard VGA to VGA cable it works and I can extend my display, as I am trying to do with the HP Envy.
I sense that the problem lies with the laptop, I've gone into the control panel of the laptop to try and change the settings to add an "external display"
This is in:-
Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Screen Resolution
The settings I have chosen for the attached monitor are:-
Display: 1. Display device on VGA
Resolution: 1600 x 900 (recommended) - This one is gray and the PC will not let me change it.
Orientation: Landscape - This one again is gray and the PC will not let me change it
Multiple Displays: Extend these displays
I think all these settings are correct yet a box pops up saying "unable to save display settings"
I am wondering if there is another sort of control panel hidden away somewhere within the HP Envy a little tick box or something that maybe needs to be ticked to or something like that?
Other than that it's a great laptop just a little frustrating that I can't add my external monitor ![]()
Thanks
John

Hi again,
So the saga continues, I stupidly purchased, without properly checking, from the internet, a DVI > VGA adaptor, which arrived earlier today, being a DVI-I connector there is nowhere for it to plug into the HP Envy 17-3002ea.
So I thought I would double check the HP Envy 17-3002ea from it's factsheet below is what it says about ports(See below):-
Ports: 1 HDMI (VGA via adapter)
2 Headphone-out
1 Microphone-in
1 USB 2.0
3 USB 3.0
1 RJ45
2 Display Ports
That would imply to me that you can attach a VGA monitor by using a HDMI > VGA adapter, I have a HDMI > VGA lead, which is what I started off with, this does not seem to work.
I now have a DVI-I to VGA adapter, unfortunately there is nowhere to plug DVI-I into looking at all the ports on the HP Envy 17-3002ea ![]()
Can anyone recommend a suitable adapter, or alternatively do I have to 'switch on the HDMI' as you previously mentioned, if I do, could you let me know where that button, tick box or whatever is hidden please.
Thanks for your help,
John

Sometimes you have to restart the Notebook with the monitor attached and turned on before the notebook recognizes it and outputs a video signal to it.
