Slow Vista on brand new DV5

Hi,

Vista-64 bit is quiet slow on my new DV5. Would it be fine to install a fresh copy of vista? How to go about it?

Re: Slow Vista on brand new DV5

Before trying to reinstall Vista, I would first try a few other things.

1.     Run Disk Cleanup.

2.     Do a full system scan with a virus/malware scan program.

3.     Check your RAM and make sure all of your RAM is working.

4.     Just for good measure, right click on your C-drive and click on properties.  Click on the Tools tab and click on error checking in order to makes sure your hard drive does not have any errors on it.

Report and let us know how it goes.

Good luck! :smileywink:

Re: Slow Vista on brand new DV5

Thanks  bwolper.

I have run the chk disk, anti virus and cleanup, nothing showed up. Additionally, the system information viewer reports full 4 gb of ram operation. However, it takes a lot of time booting up and with multiple apps usage. I was thinking of installing a fresh copy of vista. Do think its a wise idea? How to go about it?

Re: Slow Vista on brand new DV5

Personally I always like to try everything possible before reinstalling OS's.

Sometimes the system information viewers are not all that accurate.  I would physically take out each RAM stick and test each one separately by rebooting with just the one installed.  You still might come up with the same result, but I think it's worth it.

Also was there a time when it was not running so slowly?  If so, you might want to try to do a system restore to a point when it was running faster.

I would wait and see if there are any other suggestions from forum members before reinstalling Vista.

If you don't get any other responses, give the reinstall a try.

System File Checker

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, right click on the Command Prompt option, then click on the Run as Administrator option.

If you haven’t disabled the User Account Control, you will be asked for permission first...just continue on.

In the Command Prompt window, type: "sfc /scannow" then press enter.

The scan may take some time (usually 5-15 minutes) and Windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files...once complete type "exit" and press enter, then restart the notebook.

Re: Slow Vista on brand new DV5

It is actually pretty normal for Vista to be initially slow on a new machine, or after a fresh install of the OS.  Superfetch adjusts to your usage with respect to what gets preloaded - that helps speed thing up but it is adaptive and (logically) can take a bit of time.  Windows Search can also impact performance when indexing, and can be particulalry slow if you have large documents, graphics, music, or video files on a machine.  There can also be an initial sluggishness with certain network configurations, if files reside on a server.  FWIW, although it varies by setup, Windows 7 is just as succeptible to the same upfront issues.    Not knowing what you mean by slow, it is at least possible, it will improve in a few days.  If relalted to one of the issues I mentioned, reinstalling will not solve it since it only restarts the clock.  Granted, other things can cause sluggishness so it really does matter what you specifically mean by slow....

Re: Slow Vista on brand new DV5

Thanks for all the support. That has really been helpful. I guess I was expecting too much from my new machine, and to acknowledge, vista is a little slow then XP as well. But I am getting used to it. Also, reducing the bloatware from the startup programs has also helped.

One issue is still lingering on.the HP recovery manager which comes in pre-installed doent make the recovery disks. After it has performed all the initialization operations, and even started writting the data on DVD, it prompts an error. I have wasted an entire deck of DVDs on trying to make my recovery disk, but no use. All the DVDs are written with the 1st of 3 DVDs of data when the HP recovery manager gives the error. What could be a possible solution to this issue? Would norton ghost help?
