I guess win 7 tried to download and install an automatic update yesterday AM but it didn't seem to complete correctly. I didn't even notice an update downloaded until I got throught the restore option later and discovered a critical update tried to load. Nonetheless, I shutdown at work and got my laptop home and tried to startup and the system went into automatic system recovery mode but failed to fix the problem automatically. Now it just continues to reboot into recovery manager instead of loading windows normally. It's odd...tries to start windows normally then goes to a bright blue screen (seems like an HP backdrop) with system recovery giving me the following error codes once it fails to automatically fix the problem.
Problem Signature
Problem event name startup repair offline
Problem signature01 6.1.7600.16385
Problem signature02 6.1.7600.16385
Problem signature03 unknown
Problem signature04 21201020
Problem signature05 autofailover
Problem signature06 16
Problem signature07 corruptfile
OS version 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.
locale id: 1033
Also, my system restore shows several previous restore points but fails to restore them after I tried the normal system restore process. I got the following error "system restore failed to extract the file /d: \windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.30319\mscors
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Are you able to start the computer in Safe Mode. If you can, try running System Restore in this mode.

Tried to start in safe mode once already and it acted like it wanted to then went back into recovery mode. I'm backing up files (via recovery mgr) to my external USB hard drive right now. Guess I can try safe mode again once that's finished, eh?

Backup to my external USB hard drive completed successfully but still couldn't get it to start up...even in safe mode. What now? Should I just try and recover to original OEM win installation?

Hi,
Start up your computer, go to your recovery options (tap f11 as computer starts) and chose startup repair. This may or may not help and you will see a message teling you if the process has been unsuccessful. If the process was unsuccessful, from the screen now displayed, choose advanced options and from the next screen launch the Command Prompt (you may be asked to log on somewhere during this. If you are, log on as an administrator). Once you have the Command Prompt available type in the following and hit return
rstrui.exe
This should launch system restore. Pick a restore point prior to your problems and execute.
Let me know how it goes.
Best wishes,
DP-K

Well, tried it and was able to get to the command prompt with no problem then run the command like you suggested with no problem either. Then the system restore tried but failed like it had been doing as described in my first post. I don't seem to be having any trouble running command prompt or recovery manager and the disk passess all of the diagnostics, but windows still will not load and each time I try to restore to a restore point It tells me that it failed while trying to retrieve the .exe file from the D: partition area (see first post). It's as if the system is hanging from loading windows because of a corrupt file somewhere....and I have no idea where that might be. Does any of the error information in my first post provide any clues as to which file might be causing the problem?
I might take a short video of what's happening and try to post to youtube or somewhere else and then provide the link.
Ugghhh....

You've probably already tried this but what does selecting 'Start using last known good configuration' do?

It runs the same process as restore and eventually gets back to the same recovery manager panel--after unsuccessfully making to my last known good configuration point.

Hi,
Just my personal opinion, but as you have a backup of your files, i'd just reinstall the OS. That's not to say there isn't a solution, it just may be quicker!
All the best,

concur... evidently some critical file is corrupt somewhere and is preventing windows from either correcting itself or starting properly. Thanks for you help today, though.
Cheers, RDR
