Here is the run down of what has happened.
My specs are
Brand new from HP tx2
2.3 Ghz processor, 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD, no- fingerprint reader, Vista home premium 64bit
after a while i found out that the multi touch had stoped working, so I tried to install a copy of the Windows 7 Beta (because it has native MT), the install failed and my attempt to repair Vista was unsuccessful.
So i reinstalled the OS from the HDD recovery. That install worked for almost a day before my quick buttons on the side of the monitor
stopped working, and many of my programs were unresponsive even after updates and restarts
so i got a copy of Vista 64bit from my friend, I installed it, although the OS wouldn't take my Serial Key that came with my notebook.
I downloaded drivers from the HP site, I first tried to install the video driver and the install first froze and then failed. I then tried to update windows, 32 of the updates failed.
now i decided that i would to repair the install using the disk. and it froze too. I have no idea what has happened. it seems that anything that i try to do fails. I cant even get to the system recovery on the HDD anymore.
any help would be apritiated.

Order the recovery discs from HP. They will run you about $20.00 delivered. Remember that windows 7 is still beta.
As for all the issues that you are having,.. I do not believe that they are Vista related, but user introduced. I would do a wipe and reload of the system partition. You should also scan the system for virus, adware/spyware and Trojans, prior to the wipe and reload.
