If it takes a really long time to boot up your PC, there are two things I would consider doing:
1) add more memory to your PC (unless you already have max memory)
2) change the Startup program and process settings. Here are a few HP Support documents that explain how to prevent unnecessary programs from running at startup:
For Vista: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&
For Vista: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
For XP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam

Other things that can be done:
If You have Vista:
1. Check Your system with:
a) Nod32 online
b) Spybot - Search and destroy
Informations how to install and use Spybot You will find here.
2. Clean cache.
3. Defragment your disk with build in system software or with free program Auslogics Disk Defrag.
4. Use Registry cleaner. I recommend two free programs CCleaner and Auslogics Registry Cleaner.
If You have XP:
1. Check Your system with:
a) Nod32 online
b) Spybot - Search and destroy
Informations how to install and use Spybot You will find here.
2. Clean cache with this program.3. Defragment your disk with build in system software or with Auslogics Disk Defrag.
4. Use Registry cleaner. I recommend two free programs CCleaner and Auslogics Registry Cleaner.
