Update Bios EliteBook 8460p running Ubuntu

[ Edited ]

Hi there.

I would like to know what should I do to update my Bios to F.20 (sp54772.exe).

I have the usb boot created with the right estructure in fat32

But I keep getting the System Bios update failed error message.

What I'm suppose to have inside Hewlett-Packard -Bios - New??

I'm stuck. and installing windows to perform the update is not a choice.

Here are all the BIOS updates for your model, please note what the revisions are and if none of them apply, then I would leave it.

I realize this is not the answer you wanted, but if the machine is functioning normally, then updating the BIOS just because there is a new version isn't always desirable thing, especially in your case.

What problems are you having that you think the BIOS needs to be updated ?

I would also advise to stop trying to update it through a USB flash drive, there is about a 60% chance that you will "Brick" your machine.

If you must install the BIOS, get your self another hard drive, it can be one just big enough to hold an OS and 5400 RPM. Doesn't have to be fancy...

Remove your present one and install the new one to reload the original OS. This would be one way to do and then this hard drive can be put aside for further BIOS updates.

 I also found this.

 Be very careful here.

By the time you go through all of this info it may be easier to use my spare hard drive method.

The other thing to consider is that you could go through all of that and you may have no success or even worse, the BIOS chip may become corrupted.

HP machines were never known to be user friendly when it comes to their BIOS.

Re: Update Bios EliteBook 8460p running Ubuntu

Hi HaggisCat, thanks for the ubuntu link, it could be very useful for the future.

Anyway, the reason why I was trying to update the bios was that when installing Ubuntu I wasn't able to see where the bluetooth device was, and looking at the bios, it was missing. Comparing this 8460p with another one, I found that they had different versions so I thought,  "maybe it is all  because of the Bios" but... ding!!

This 8460p doesn't have any bluetooth device!!  While olders have it.

I'm working for HP, but not directly, they just bought our company, and as far as I know, according to the contract we have, the 8460p comes with bluetooth, but if you take a look at this laptop specs now, the bluetooth device is missing...

...while you can find the driver on its drivers list.

Nice play HP.
