Upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate on Pav dv5 1125nr notebook: Big problem

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I was recently given an HP Pavilion dv5 1125nr notebook computer which came with Vista Home Premium. As a result of a problem with the coding of Vista, an error occurred which resulted in BSOD's no matter what I attempted to do (occured if I selected safe mode, regular, last known good config, restore [e.g. F11 option], repair, etc).

After doing some research I learned this was a result of poor coding in Vista, not a virus, etc. Since the laptop came with no install disk, and repair/restore were both impossible, I used a Microsoft Technet and downloaded a copy of Vista Ultimate, complete with SP1. I installed it after formatting my drives, no problem. Immediately after booting I began having issues. IE would crash, downloads crash (saying something about an assertion failure, C++ documentation and JIT needing to be enabled), I can't get MS updates because it claims I'm fully updated, and installs crash (including HP graphics drivers). HP Software Update also crashes, so I can't use that, either.

I was told that I'm missing HP motherboard drivers, which I cannot find on the HP website. Is this the case? Do I need motherboard drivers before I can install anything else? Or is there some other thing I need before I can be up and running?

Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.

Re: Upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate on Pav dv5 1125nr notebook: Big problem

It sounds like you have a hardware problem somewhere, maybe hdd or ram, since neither version of Vista runs on the laptop. In BIOS try running the hdd diagnostics.

I really don't see how Motherboard or any other drivers will be of use since you say all fail or crash_but try THIS

I am 100% sure I do not have a hardware problem, as I am currently running in Linux (Ubuntu), flawlessly...no problems at all. I will try the thing you linked. What is it, if you don't mind me asking? I'll let you know if it works.

Re: Upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate on Pav dv5 1125nr notebook: Big problem

I'm not sure what such a driver does, but it doesn't appear to have resolved my issues:

-HP help/support still crashes when I click "software, drivers, and BIOS updates"

-Microsoft Update still claims I'm fully updated

-Device Manager in Vista shows only "standard VGA controller", as opposed to my ATI HD3200

-And I still get the error when I download files

Thank you for the suggestion, do you have any others? This is really annoying. Is there some other updates I need?
