Useless Update Message

HP 6710b with Win7-32.  Every so often, I receive a notice in the lower right corner of my screen that an update is available and do I want to download it.  There is no button on the notice to say Yes or No.  My only option is to go to the task manager and delete the hpWCLi.exe HP Update process.  I would eithe rlike to have a useful update or be able to eliminate that process entirely, but can't find it.  Any suggestions?

Re: Useless Update Message

Hi Terry,

This message is probably coming from your HP update manager.

Two things to try, the first of which may fix it outright, and the second of which can banish the message altogether if it does not behave itself in the future.

An explanation:  The Update manager is supposed to (of course) give you the option to download and install any available HP updates.  The lack of the buttons is a buggy bit that shows up in bad instructions - sometimes the result of old code, and sometimes the result of -- the buggy bits.

Try updating your HP Support Assistant

First, get rid of any older version:

Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >

Scroll down, find, and Uninstall HP Support Assistant.

Restart your computer after uninstalling the existing version of Support Assistant.

Install the Latest Version of the Support Assistant

HP Support Assistant

================================================================================

You can control WHEN the message shows up,

AND whether it shows up at all.

After the Support Assistant is updated:

Call up (Open) HP Support Assistant > (Launch HP Support Assistant) >

Tune-up > View Settings > View Notification Settings >

For example:  Set / CHECK "Taskbar Only"  >> to turn OFF popups...

So...Select as desired... > Apply > Close the Support Assistant

================================================================================

Another method to qauickly control this:

Start > search / type "HP Update" > Click on HP Update to Open >

Settings > Adjust schedule as desired

================================================================================

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Re: Useless Update Message

Thank you. I think that I had HP Update installed from the original Vista install on the computer, and support assistant was not installed with Win 7, since I just used a MS update disk.  I uninstalled HP Update through the control panel, rebooted and downloaded Support Assistant.  I am going to install it. I expect that it will probably solve the problem.

Re: Useless Update Message

You are welcome!

If the pop-ups from HPSA get in the way, just set it to "Taskbar" only.

Dragon-Tip:

IF HPSA ever fails to install and update your HP updates as you wish, you can at least make note of what the updates are supposed to be, go to your own computer's HP website, and download the updates for manual installation.  Lots of people do updates this way.

How-To:

Install Software and Drivers from HP Website

Go to the top of the HP forum page to Support and Drivers

  • If prompted, Enter your Country or Region and
  • Enter your Computer Model information,
  • Go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Select desired Category
  • Expand and decide if you need to install that package.
  • Assure that you download and install only the most recent versions of each driver or program.
  • Save the appropriate *.exe installation package on your computer

NOTE the name and the location - the *.exe file will likely save to "Downloads “

  • Install the Software / Driver installation package:  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

NOTE:  There is sometimes a lot of information at the computer’s website.  Be sure to take an extended look at what’s available.
