Re: User guide missing dv6 series

dont feel bad there.. the one mine came with is a 2007 user guide for xp and vista and older hp programs.. i think its just a generic user guide to help along on some functions such as replacing the memory and hard drive... on the product support page however is all the current updated user how to-s and help guides...

Re: User guide missing dv6 series

Hey Wolverine,

:smileyhappy:  I'm just irritated by poor code.  One shouldn't get error messages and one should have  help files on a new computer.  The notebook wasn't a free toy in a box of cereal, MIke paid serious money and he should have software that works properly.  Smiling.

I never worked for HP, but I worked with them as a (major) Customer for many, many years.  They are capable of giving very good service and they have good people.  Personally, I don't let go of things because first line support says they don't have the answer.  Mike should not be getting errors when he tries to use help on a new computer.  It's wrong.  Someone in HP should provide a solution other than, "Well, I don't see it on my list," and "I don't know what's on the ftp site."  Not good enough.

Anyway, it was good to vent.  Mile will be fine.  If he can get a good workaround, that should suffice.  Sometimes the answser is "Fix it yourself".

Kind Regards,
Dragon-Fur

Re: User guide missing dv6 series

An update. The executable you mentioned, 41981,did not work. Some odd pages were displayed so I had to uninstall it. The old guide from 2007 is working but its outdated. It uses html files to display info, not the newer pdfs. I did get some files off a similar dv6 at BB but so far I can't get Help Assistant to work with them. To any HP Expert out there today - where can I get an install of the HPDocviewer and NotebookDocs that will run with Support Assistant and pull up the pdf? My machine dv6-6117dx was shipped from the factory with no pdfs and no viewers and associated dlls. They are not in the recovery partition either. Been there, done that.

Dragon-fur, I may have some other info tomorrow if no one from HP responds.

Re: User guide missing dv6 series

[ Edited ]

Mike,

Rats.  I had high hopes for that patch.

Well, you are into this for so much at this point; my next option may not appeal...

How about pdf converter that will convert the pdf help files into html?

CoolUtils has a converter that will do this (and convert pdfs into almost anything else, too):

CoolUtils TotalPDFConverter

I just downloaded the PDF Converter from CoolUtils and converted my dv7's "Getting Started" manual from pdf to html.  It's pretty clean.  If you pay for it, the tool works without the warning pop-up ("private use only - no commercial use")... This converter will do batch jobs.

I have another CoolUtils package (tried the free and eventually purchased the paid version) and I'm really pleased with it.

Maybe you could convert the files you need and push them into the appropriate folder.  Poof!  Magic.

OK, I thought the 41981 was magic.  I cannot be trusted.  Smiling.

Try it and see what you think.

PDF Converter opens after you install it (the installation also places an icon on your Desktop)

  • On the left, scroll to the folder that holds the file you want to convert
  • CHECK the file(s)
  • Then, up along the top row, find the output you desire (HTML) and click on it.
  • A box will come up to warn you not to cheat,
  • A menu will pop up to ask you where to drop the output (converted) file
  • Click START

It is my pleasure to assist.

Re: User guide missing dv6 series

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it in a day or two. The files I mentioned above, from the dv6 at BB, I just copied across so it maybe they're not operating as planned because there are no keys set in the registry. I did look inside them and set up directories based on the pointers there but so far nothing. I'm getting into stuff I'm not familiar with. The files are two independent apps but I need everything to link together.

I did find that the TX model spec sheet shows user guides ship with software so maybe I can work on that angle. I may post a new thread with that subject and see if someone picks it up.

Re: User guide missing dv6 series

Mike,

I understand.

I hope you find a solution.  When you do, please post how you fixed it.  I am interested in knowing what it's going to take to get this to work.

I bet Wolverine would like to hear about it, too - he has "old" help files in his machine.

Good Luck!

Dragon-Fur
