I have set up my fingerprint reader with several fingerprints and also have a password logon and have been using mostly fingerprint recognition to log on to my HP Pavilion laptop. I have had the laptop for 2 months now and once or twice a week the fingerprint reader would stop working and disappear from the control panel - no biometric reader available - then it would start working again for no apparent reason the next time I started the laptop. I returned the laptop to HP as the problem was getting worse and seemed to stop working altogether, HP returned it with the note that there was no problem with the sensor and that the reader was working. I wasn't able to log on with my finger so I thought I needed to scan prints again but there was no biometric device to do this and simplepass could not detect it. Sometime later when I stared it again the reader was working but then it wasn't. The next day the reader worked again but now it's not....... The biometric device was present in the control panel when it worked but is absent when that it isn't working.

Hi, I believe your problem to be the same as mine. The HP default set up for the finger print scanner is set to disable when our computers goes to sleep. Ever since I unchecked the box beside "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" n the below image, my scanner has worked flawlessly (FYI: I had been keeping my laptop plugged in, so it always had access to "power"):
GOOD LUCK! I hope it works for you too!!! =D

Thanks for that tip and image. Returned laptop for repair as the biometric device needed to be replaced. It had disappeared from the device manager.
Thanks again ![]()

How can we request that the biometric device be replaced? Mine has been malfunctioning basically since I got it, but when I open the devise manager, the devise doesn't even appear on the list.

I only noticed the problem when a browser was left open when entering sleep. This fix worked for me too.
However you figured it out, Thanks
