What do I need to upgrade to Win 7 - PC purcase was Vista with XP downgrade

Laptop purchased under the program where it was supposedly a Vista purchase but with an installed downgrade to XP. Would like to update to Win 7 - will an Win 7 update version work and what is needed.

To upgrade to win7, you need first put vista back on the system1st.

You can use the upgrade version of Windows 7 but will have to do the Custom or Clean install to wipe the hdd and install. Of course you would have to use the same procedure using full version also. If it were me I would go for an OEM full copy,which can be purchased for around same price as upgrade version.That way if you later had to reinstall there wouldn't be a problem since the Upgrade version would not have the original XP install to verify eligibilty to use it.
