Great, hopefully his copy will produce better results. Be sure to delete the old contents of the XP folder on your hdd.

Okay, this is possibly a dumb question, but in the guidelines for xp downgrade it states that, for difficult models with AMD processors, I must install an AMD chipset first. Not sure what that means...
Additionally, it says to download .net framework and a southbridge driver. I am assuming that I am supposed to do all three of these things (chipset, framework and southbridge) after I get XP to install, correct?

Success! The root of the problem: I was selecting the wrong option in the HAL selections. I had been trying to use the 'MBS Dual Processor' option. I ended up using the 'Standard PC' option and everything took off!
Okay, now on to the next question: The guidelines say that I must install the AMD chipset first. I am not sure what that means. I am poking around on AMD's website for a chipset driver for my processor but they don't have it listed. I have an AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile m500 processor and an ATI Radeon 4200 graphics card. Any suggestions?
Jason

Install .Net Framework first Here
Under "Optional" downloads get your Southbridge driver HERE

Good to know you are in a good progress.
However choosing standard PC option would be the same as If you press F7, the Standard PC HAL loads.
The ACPI compliance check is bypassed that lead to running XP without ACPI feature.
Open windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, tab to Performance and see however core is displayed.
Set power scemes as Portable/Laptop and see if the CPU can throttle down when running idle, use CPU-Z to check it.
About your question, please follow Cheryl suggestion.

Okay

I am not able to get the southbridge driver installed. When I download the file in your link I get the AMD Catalyst suite, which I expected. I am getting version 3.00.08. when run, it just sits there and searches for hardware (I am running it in XP). If I run version 3.00.0774 it will complete, but I don't know if it is installing what it is supposed to. I have a Radeon HD 4200
Rakhmad
Should I be following your instructions in Windows 7 or in XP? I am assuming XP
Additionally:
I am unable to get the wireless assistant to turn on. I have downloaded the atheros driver needed, and the device is installed and enabled. When I try to run the wireless assistant I get a message that says the wireless buton must be on to allow wireless assistant to start. I am unable to turn the wireless button on (it stays orange even when pressed). Not sure what I need to do to fix that. getting kind of frustrating having to jump back into Win 7 to post on this
Thanks again for the help!

If you still have SM Bus missing a driver in Device Manager you still need the Southbridge driver. It is under OPTIONAL DOWNLOADS tab on the page.
On the wireless issue, enter BIOS setup to see if you have a setting to enable wireless in there. Some models have it,some don't.

Umm just a side note, that wireless button on your notebook won't change color but will activate/deactivate itself. It's just the color which doesn't work. I just installed XP on a dv6 series notebook last night and that's what happened to me.

Cheryl
I downloaded the southbridge driver you indicated. When it is installing it starts looking for hardware on my machine and just grinds. I let it go for ten minutes last night and it didn't do a thing. I even tried installing SP3 and that still didn't help... I'll double check the SM Bus tonight
Arda_S
If the color isn't changing how do I know when it is enabled? The problem I am having is that I can't run the wireless setup assistant because it isn't finding any wireless networks available. That indicates to me that the wireless module isn't being enabled.
Thanks again guys

If your SM Bus is not showing with error in Device Manager you are good. On the wireless, I have found that XP's wireless configuration manager works quite well. Rather than using Wireless Assistant, go into Control Panel,Network Connections and right click the wireless, choose Properties and be sure it is checked/selected to allow Windows to manage it. Also check under Administartive Tools,Services to be sure Wireless Zero Configuration is on and set to auto start. Restart and give the wireless a few minutes to search. Click the icon in System tray for wireless and go from there. Post back with your findings.
