Try enabling it manually from Control Panel > Network Connections as CherylG said and see if it works. It probably will if you installed right drivers.
Those Sound/Wireless buttons just don't want to work on XP, can't find any solution for them so far.

Have you installed HP Quick Launch Buttons driver Here
Perform a Hard Reset:
1. Disconnect all external devices and remove all USB devices and media cards.
2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for at 30-45 seconds.
3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (do not connect the battery for first startup).
4. Power on.

Looks like my sm bus is not being loaded or enabled. Windows says it can't find any drivers for it. I also tried enabling my wireless per the directions by Arda_S and was unsuccessful.
I got to thinking about things a little and I am wondering if my XP got installed goofy. Here's why:
My computer has 4 partitions on it. 3 are primary, one is logical. My primary partitions are:
System (100 mb)
HP Tools
XP Partition (40 gb) (Drive letter D)
My logical partition:
Windows 7 (Drive letter C) (200+ gb)
When I installed XP I chose the partition named 'XP Partition', which should be drive D. When I boot XP I end up with 4 partitions showing in explorer and it seems that XP is installed on partition E (!?). It is labeling the system partition as C and the windows 7 partition as D. Now, everything I have read up to this point says that regardless of which operating system you are booting with it will see it's partition as C. I'm not getting that.
Additionally, when I installed the .NetFix in XP it installed it on the D drive, so I don't think that the files even went to the right place, which I think means XP wasn't seeing any of the .NetFix files. I think that is leading to some of my problems.
So last night, in Win 7, I formatted the D partition (called XP Partition). I began installing XP again and this time I chose the D partition to install it to. I got a warning that said something like 'There is already a folder called \Windows on this partition...If you continue you may lose data'. I have the option to choose a different partition, but the drive that is labeled as 'XP Partition' is being assigned a drive letter of E. What in the world!?
So, I guess if anyone has an opinion on what to do here (install XP on the D partition or use the 'E' partition labled as 'XP Partition') that would be helpful. Also, if anyone has any idea if this could be the cause of some of my problems, let me know
Thoroughly lost,
Jason

Okay, I'm making progress on this. I ended up making all of my 4 partitions primary. Formated my XP partition and reinstalled. It looks good now. Southbridge driver installed too.
I also got my Radeon Mobility HD 4200 graphics driver to install. I'll post a sumary of that once I finish everything up (hopefully tonight).

Alright, looks like I have everything working except two things: in my xp device manager I have a floppy disk controller that is missing a driver, but I don't know what the device even is?
Also, I have an Atheros 9285 wireless card that I cannot get to see ANY wireless networks in XP. I think the root of the problem is that my wireless button is still 'orange' and I can't change it. I have installed the quicklaunch button driver but I don't know if it installed correctly. Anybody have any idea how to check?
A final development: the whole reason I am trying to downgrade is so I can connect my digital camera using a pcmcia firewire card. I had trouble getting XP to recognize the card when it was inserted in the slot. I happened to restart the computer into XP with the card already inserted and it recognized it and installed it. Does this sound normal?
