Windows 7 - Long Start-up

I have a HP Pavillion dm4-1160us with Win 7 Home Premium O/S. My question applies to the time needed from when the O/S starts to boot up to when it finishes. Initially this went rather quickly but degraded to several minutes a few months ago. What would be a reasonable time for this process to complete? Any suggestions on what might be causing a slow boot? Thanks very much.

Re: Windows 7 - Long Start-up

Hi

You have a couple of options as I see it please find the weblink given below might help you to fix your issue.

1) Do a MSCONFIG

2) Improving the Performance of Your Computer

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Windows 7 - Long Start-up

Thanks for the guidance. I have read over the msconfig material and printed it so I can apply it. Went through the Improving Performace material and tried a few things as suggested using the HP Support Assistant. My laptop has been cleaned out monthly - most recently 4/16/12. I'll likely run the defrag routine tonight. Will see if that changes anything and then move on to msconfig.

Re: Windows 7 - Long Start-up

Update....

1. The monthly clean-up that's running on my laptop includes defrag. I have not rerun defrag now as it ran 4/16/12.

2. Before running msconfig, I tested both a cold start and a restart, capturing the times the bootup reached various points. Both cold start and restart produced these results:

-HP splash screen launches at 3-4 secs

-Starting Windows launches at 10-12 secs

-Screen goes black at 43-44 secs

-Home screen is live at 1:30-1:33 secs

2. Launched the msconfig.exe testing process and followed the testing proces outlined therein. The interesting result is that every reboot produced the same results as outlined above.

So now I raise this question: is the sequence and times outlined above appropriate for my machine? In other words, is 30 seconds a reasonable time for Win 7 Home Premium to load (if I am interpreting the data correctly), and is another 45 seconds a reasonable amount of time for whatever is happening while the screen is totally black? And what is the computer doing while the screen is black?

Thanks for your help!
