Windows 7 for HP Compaq nc6120 Notebook PC

I want to upgrade my HP Compaq nc6120 Notebook PC from Windows XP Professional x86 to Windows 7 Professional x86.

When I tried to upgrade to Vista I remember having driver issues. There are no Vista or 7 drivers listed on the support page for this laptop.

Is there a way around the compatibility issues to make windows 7 work on this laptop?

Hi:

The nc6120 will not run the Aero features of Windows Vista or Windows 7. I wouldn't bother upgrading it since not being able to take advantage of all the graphics features of W7 would be a show-stopper for me.

However, should you still wish to upgrade to W7, most of the drivers will be installed automatically. After installation, do a windows update found in the programs menu, and let W7 find any updated drivers for your notebook off the W7 update site. Then for any drivers still missing, you can install the Windows Vista Home Basic drivers for the nc6120. Everything will work fine except the graphics. No Aero.

Hi:

There is no, and never will be a solution. The onboard GMA 900 is not windows 7 capable. There are no drivers available to make Aero work in that notebook.

You will need to get a newer notebook with at least a GMA 950 graphics adapter.

Istall windows 7 home basic then install windows 7 home basic color changer 2.0 to gange window & taskbar color

without the need of aero. Looks great !

I have a better idea than that.

Over time I have found a driver that works perfectly, except no Aero.

So if you want to install any version of windows 7 on an nc6120 or nc6220, just download and run this driver.

It will error out (Gives OS not supported error or some such wording).

Now, go to the device manager, and click on the video adapter. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the "Browse my Computer for Software" method and browse to C:\SWSetup\sp34749.

Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver will load.

Now you can run any version of windows 7 and your graphics will look and work fine -- except no Aero.

This solution you provided works!!! I have been searching for a way to get Windows 7 to display on dual monitors for weeks for my hp compaq nc6120 and this is the first answer that I have come across that actually works. I don't care about the Aero display I just wanted my picture on another screen. Thank You!!!

After downloading the drivers first time then again download the intel 915GM graphic drivers for microsoft windows vista,

when you will be installing the drivers second time it will show a notation in that notation there will be 4 to 5 option, click on option not at all and wait for 5 to 1 second and there you good.
